SugarSync Ditching Free Cloud Storage for Paid Plans

[ad_1]

SugarSync today announced its plan to transition from a free cloud service to a paid-only model beginning Feb. 8.

The freemium file-synchronization service currently offers cloud backup and syncing for mobile and desktop users.

“There are many companies in this space that are giving away free storage, however, most of these companies will not be viable,” CEO Mike Grossman said in a statement. “We are already in a solid financial position and this shift will further strengthen our business.”

Customers can still test drive the service with a 90-day/5GB or 30-day/60GB free trial, but those planning to use SugarSync long-term will soon be required to pay up. Individual plans(Opens in a new window) come in 60, 100, or 250GB packages, for $7.49, $9.99, or $24.99 per month, respectively.

Existing users will not be able to keep their free plans, but, according to Time(Opens in a new window), SugarSync is offering a 75 percent discount on its basic plan for those who sign up by Dec. 16.

Businesses get added perks like admin control, live phone support, and remote wipe, starting at $55 per month for one to three users; organizations with more than three users must contact SugarSync for tailored plans.

As the cloud consumer base grows, so must SugarSync. This move, according to the company, will allow it to focus on updates and improvements to better meet users’ needs.

“This change will allow us to better serve loyal customers and expand our service offerings,” Grossman said. “We’re excited about the next stage in our growth and confident that our customers and new users alike will achieve greater value through these enhancements.”

A redesigned mobile app and additional features will also launch next year.
