Ozone Neon Preview

[ad_1]

The Ozone Neon ($62.37) looks like a standard wired compact mouse, but the LED backlighting and Ozone Gaming Gear logo will tell you at a glance that this isn’t your average pointing device. It boasts an adjustable 200- to 6,400-dpi sensitivity rating and eight programmable buttons, so it’s definitely a gamer’s accessory.

The Neon($33.50 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) gets its name from the internal LED lighting. It can be set to light up in four colors (blue, cyan, green, and red) or off. The lit scroll wheel and center button are pretty standard looking, but the perimeter ring and logo definitely give off a gaming grid vibe. It can store up to five different profiles, which can be toggled through different button and lighting configurations. For example, red lighting could tell you the mouse is set for 6,400 dpi with your sniper setup for first-person shooter (FPS) games, with green signifying 400 dpi and your run-and-gun setup.

One quirk is that the four side buttons are mirrored, so the left front and right front will always have the same function. This reduces the total discrete button functions from eight to six. It’s not a huge drawback since the buttons by your pinky finger are usually seldom used, but it’s still noticeable.

You can setup the Neon with macros, as any gamer’s mouse should, but note that you’ll have to do all the work. Unlike some mice, the Neon’s configuration screens aren’t pre-set for today’s popular games. Offsetting that drawback, 128KB of onboard memory will hold your profiles and configurations so you can pop the mouse into a PC that doesn’t have the configuration software pre-loaded, and your macros will still work. You will of course have to plug into your home PC if you want to change the profiles.

The Ozone Neon works well as both an everyday and gaming mouse. It’s good for both lefties and righties, and the built-in memory is great for the gamer with several PCs at their disposal.

Pros
  • Ambidextrous design.
  • Highly customizable.
  • On-board memory.
Cons
  • Too small for those with larger hands.
  • Side-button macros are programmed in opposing pairs, not individually.
  • May be too light for some tastes.
The Bottom Line

The design of Ozone’s Neon mouse will please lefties and righties alike, but its form factor is small by gaming mouse standards.
