Mattel, in an effort to interest girls in STEM skills and and highlight an underrepresented career field for women, released Robotics Engineer Barbie today.
As the newest representative of more than 200 Barbie career dolls, Robotics Engineer Barbie invites girls to explore STEM, and not just by playing with the doll in the conventional way: They can also learn real coding skills online thanks to Tynker.
Tynker is a visual coding language that uses blocks of code that stack together; it also functions as a platform that teaches kids to code through game-based activities. Through Mattel’s partnership with Tynker, kids will be able to access and explore six different “Barbie-themed coding experiences”—Musician, Astronaut, Pastry Chef, Robotics Engineer, Farmer, and Beekeeper—and learn about coding logic, problem-solving, and the building blocks of code.
In 2016, Mattel released another geeky doll in its iconic line: Game Developer Barbie, who sported distressed jeans, a hip t-shirt, and cherry-red hair.
