AMD Radeon R7 Series SSD (240GB) Preview

[ad_1]

You would be forgiven if you heard the model name for the AMD Radeon R7 Series SSD (240GB) ($179.99) and asked yourself, AMD makes a 240GB Radeon GPU card? But no, it is actually an enthusiast solid-state drive. Using components sourced from OCZ/Toshiba, the R7 Series( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) goes after gamers who want to sit back and see as many AMD parts as possible inside their windowed PC chassis.

With a black body and AMD’s black, red, and silver Radeon logo prominently placed, the 7mm thick, 2.5-inch SATA 3.0 drive has a distinctive look, especially compared with the more generic silver bodies of rivals.

The gamer market exists between the professional/enterprise class user and the casual, general-purpose user in terms of demands and willingness to pay extra for performance. The Radeon R7’s4-year warranty sits in the middle between the 3 years you’d get on a consumer level drive and the 5 years a corporate drive would be covered for. Likewise, basic 240GB SSDs go for less than $130, while enterprise-oriented drives push past $300 up to $700 for server class models. The Radeon R7 Series SSD’s performance sits somewhere in the middle of the pack. It has more speed than basic drives, but not too much more.

The Radeon R7 Series SSD (240GB), the company’s first foray into the SSD market has decent speed, with a good warranty. That’s a recipe for a recommendation as a component for gamers, plus it will look good next to your Radeon R9 graphics cards.

Pros
  • Fast large-file write speeds.
  • Includes a desktop drive bracket and Acronis cloning software.
  • Four-year warranty.
Cons
  • Costs a little more and generally doesn’t perform as well as comparable drives in our benchmark tests.
  • No 1TB model.
The Bottom Line

The Radeon R7 Series SSD (240GB), AMD’s first entry into the solid-state drive (SSD) market. It’s a solid option for gamers, but not the best balance of price and performance available.
