Corsair Force LX (256GB) Preview

[ad_1]

The Corsair Force LX (256GB) solid-state drive (SSD) ($149.99) is a prime example of the general march of technology. SSD prices are down, capacities are up, and 256GB is emerging as a competitive capacity, good for the mainstream user who needs a bit more local storage than the bare minimum.

Available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities, the Force LX( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is a 7mm thick, 2.5-inch SSD made for thin laptops and ultrabooks. It can slot in to replace an existing spinning hard drive, or you can add it to a laptop or desktop with a free drive bay. For best results, we recommend using it as your laptop’s primary (C:) or boot drive. The SSD comes without common accessories, like a spacer (for 9mm drive bays), transfer cables, or a 3.5-inch drive bay adapter. It does have a three-year warranty.

Thanks to its Silicon Motion SM2246EN controller, the Force LX claims up to a 560MBps read speed and a 300 MBps write speed. It was able to get close to these speeds on the AS-SSD Sequential Read & Write Speeds test (516MBps read; 333MBps write). This means the drive is well-suited to work on large photo and video files, though competitors were able to exceed 500MBps on the write test as well. The Force LX was a bit slower than rivals on the AS-SSD 4K Read & Write Speeds test, which measures small-file read and write performance, but it was still competent, finishing at the middle of the pack or better.
