The OCZ Vertex 460 (240GB) ($199.95) is a solid choice for upgrading a desktop or laptop PC to use a speedy, reliable solid-state drive (SSD). While it doesn’t distinguish itself from the other mainstream SSDs on price or performance, a couple of added accessories, like drive imaging software and a 3.5-inch mounting bracket, are nice extras.

The Vertex 460($169.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is a pretty standard-looking SATA III (6Gbps) SSD in a 2.5-inch laptop drive form factor. It can be swapped in for the existing hard drive in your desktop or laptop PC without too much fuss. The SSD will fit in the 7mm-tall drive bay of most thin and light laptops, and it comes with a 3.5-inch hard drive bay adapter so you can install it in a desktop in just a little more time. OCZ also includes a key for Acronis TrueImage HD, so you can clone your existing C: drive to the Vertex 460 without having to scrounge for another solution.

The Vertex 460 uses extra overprovisioning measures to ensure longer useful life from the drive (essentially reserving portions of the memory for release later as parts of the SSD stop working). However, this also means that the drive only has a 240GB capacity instead of the 250GB to 256GB found in some competitors.

Performance was competitive with rivals from Crucial, Intel, Sandisk, Samsung and Seagate. Any difference between this drive and the top scorers were only measurable by benchmark tests, and are unlikely to show up in day-to-day use. Overall it’s a nice competitor, and should show up on your short list if you’re in the market for speedy SSD storage.
