Google Photos Will Organize, Store All Your Pics

Are all your digital photos scattered across devices and online services in a disorganized mess? Does it stress you out? Google wants to help.

At its I/O developer conference today, the search giant launched Google Photos(Opens in a new window), which “gives you a home for all your photos and videos, helps you organize and bring your moments to life, and lets you share and save what matters.” Arriving today for Android, iOS, and the Web, Google Photos offers unlimited free storage for photos up to 16 megapixels and high-definition video up to 1080p.

Google Photos keeps all your images and videos organized automatically, “by the people, places, and things that matter,” Anil Sabharwal, head of Google Photos, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) Thursday. “You don’t have to tag or label any of them, and you don’t need to laboriously create albums.”

The app also offers some editing tools, letting you tune a photo’s color and lighting, as well as create collages, animations, and movies with soundtracks. You can also swipe left to open Assistant view, where you’ll see some auto-generated collages, videos, and photos, which you can choose to keep, edit, or discard.

The service makes it easier to share your photos with other people — without having to download and re-upload them across a bunch of different sites or apps.

“You can now take any set of photos and videos, or any album, and simply create a link to share hundreds of photos at once,” Sabharwal wrote. “The recipient can see what you shared without a special app or login, then immediately save the high-quality images to their own library with a single tap.”
