Dell’s UltraSharp monitors have long been known for their solid performance and minimalist good looks, and the latest addition to the family, the UltraSharp 27 InfinityEdge Monitor U2717D ($719.99), is no different. This 27-inch display uses an In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel to deliver accurate colors and precise grayscale performance, and its bezel-free design offers a (mostly) seamless fit when used in a multi-monitor setup. Moreover, it is equipped with a generous feature set, including multiple video ports, an ergonomic stand, and a USB hub. And it costs less.
Design and Features
The U2717D ($569.99 at Dell)(Opens in a new window) uses the same InfinityEdge (bezel-free) design as the Dell UltraSharp 24 InfinityEdge Monitor U2417H ($256.49 at Dell)(Opens in a new window) and features the same gray-and-black cabinet. The 27-inch WQHD (2,560-by-1,440) panel has a non-reflective coating, a peak brightness of 350 cd/m2, a 1,000:1 native contrast ratio, and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It also has a 6-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response and a 60Hz refresh rate. The cabinet has four VESA-compliant mounting holes and is supported by a stand that provides tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustments.
There are four function buttons and a Power switch located on the right side of the bottom edge of the U2717D’s cabinet. Picture settings are fairly basic and include eight picture presets (Standard, Multimedia, Movie, Game, Paper, Color Temperature, sRGB, and Custom), as well as Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, and two Gamma settings (PC or Mac). You don’t get the advanced 6-Axis-Hue and -Saturation color controls that you get with the BenQ SW2700PT and the Acer Predator XB271HU ($329.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) , and there are no Blue Light settings on this model.
At the rear of the U2717D’s cabinet, facing downward, are two DisplayPort inputs (one full size and one mini), a DisplayPort output for daisy-chaining multiple monitors, an HDMI input, an upstream USB 3.0 port, two USB 3.0 downstream ports, and an audio output. The left side of the cabinet holds two additional USB 3.0 ports.

The U2717D comes with a three-year warranty on parts, labor, and backlight and is eligible for Dell’s Advanced Exchange program, which guarantees that a replacement unit will be sent out (if necessary) within one business day. It also comes with a resource CD, as well as a USB upstream cable and a mini-DisplayPort cable.
Performance
Color accuracy in testing was spot-on. As shown on the chromaticity chart below, red, green, and blue colors (represented by the colored dots) are all very closely aligned with their ideal CIE coordinates (represented by the boxes). Colors appeared uniform in the DisplayMate Color Purity and Uniformity tests, and scenes from Marvel’s Antman on Blu-ray were rich in color and showed excellent image detail.
The panel aced the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test, displaying every shade of gray correctly and providing crisp shadow and highlight detail in my test images. Viewing-angle performance was typical for a good IPS panel, with no noticeable color shifting or loss of luminance when viewed from an extreme side, top, or bottom angle.
See How We Test MonitorsWhile not designed for gaming, the U2717D’s 5-millisecond pixel response did an admirable job of handing fast action in my Crysis 3 (PC) and Grand Theft Auto V (Sony PlayStation 4($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window)) tests, but there was minimal screen tearing in the Crysis 3 tests. A 37-millisecond input lag (the time it takes for the monitor to react to a controller command), which I measured using a Leo Bodnar Video Signal Lag Tester, is at the high end of acceptable lag; our fastest monitors, the BenQ XL2430T($449.00 at Walmart)(Opens in a new window) and the SW2700PT, measured 9.5 milliseconds.
Power usage was a bit less than other 27-inch monitors I’ve tested. It measured 27 watts during testing while set to the Standard picture preset, compared with the Acer Predator Z271’s ($1,299.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) 28 watts and the Viewsonic XG2700-4K’s ( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) 35 watts. However, the Acer Z271’s ECO power-saving mode reduced consumption to 21 watts, and the Viewsonic XG2700-4K used only 18 watts when set to its Conserve ECO mode. The U2717D doesn’t offer an ECO power-saving mode.
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking for a 27-inch monitor to use in a side-by-side, multi-display configuration or simply prefer the bezel-free look, the Dell UltraSharp 27 InfinityEdge Monitor U2717D will not disappoint. Its IPS panel delivers outstanding color and grayscale performance, wide viewing angles, and a crisp WQHD picture, and it has multiple video inputs, a video output, and a four-port USB hub.
