The 120GB Emtec SSD Power Plus ($50) is an inexpensive internal solid-state drive (SSD) that’s a good choice if you’re looking to extend the life of a laptop for a couple more years. It’s no speed demon by any means, but you’ll likely find it a good upgrade from the 4,200-5,400rpm SATA hard drive in your aging PC. The SSD Power Plus($13.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is one of the least expensive SSDs on the market, which is a far cry from the $300+ 64GB SSDs in the late 2000s.

Emtec might be a new name to you, but it’s built on what became of the BASF Magnetic storage company that made all those floppy disks and VHS tapes years ago. The company has been building its reputation on flash drives in Europe, so it’s no fly by night organization.

The SSD Power Plus is built into a standard 2.5-inch shell, so it will fit in just about any recent laptop. It doesn’t come with any accessories, mounting hardware, or software, but you probably shouldn’t expect any at this price point. As long as you’re swapping a laptop drive, you won’t need anything else anyway.

The drive has very good sequential read throughput, but relatively poor write speeds for an SSD. You likely won’t mind if you’re replacing a slow hard drive, but you may notice the difference if you have other laptops with faster SSDs.
