BARCELONA – File this one under “Weird Stuff from MWC.” The Tecdesk Smart 5500 is a standard 5-inch Android phone. Built into a full-on desk phone. Check out the slideshow, because you really need to see this thing in action.
I know this looks more like a standard issue desk phone with an Android device built in, but I assure you it’s the other way around. This is an Android phone first and foremost. There’s no place to connect a traditional phone jack; this baby is wireless. The Smart 5500 has support for 2G GSM and 3G CDMA networks. You can even use it as a personal hotspot to share its Internet connectivity with additional devices.
The Android component is a 5-inch capacitive LCD with 800-by-480-pixel resolution. It looks a little dim and grainy, but it worked fine. The phone is running Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), which is pretty dated. But since this is a fully functioning Android device, you get access to the Google Play store, from which you can download more than 700,000 apps. The phone is powered by a 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7227A processor, which is also dated, but fast enough for most uses outside of gaming.
You also get a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and Bluetooth connectivity, so you can consume media while you work. And if you look at the photos, you’ll see a little camera popped up above the display, which is there for conference calls and video chat. It also takes 3-megapixel stills.
The reason to buy the Smart 5500, according to Tecdesk, is the battery. If you’re ever in a situation where the power is out, chances are your desk phone is out, too. The Smart 5500 has a 2200mAh battery. Now, that isn’t going to keep you up and running for days, but Tecdesk says the battery should last for about 4.5 hours of talk time, which may be enough to keep business up and running until power has been restored. Standby time is rated at up to 160 hours.
There’s a battery and SIM compartment, but I didn’t see a microSD port for expandable storage. As it is, the Smart 5500 can store up to 5,000 contacts, but I couldn’t get a spec for storage capacity.
I wasn’t able to make a call with the Smart 5500, but when you lift the phone off the receiver, you’re automatically brought to the traditional Android dialing pad on the screen. You can dial on there or using the physical keys below.
There’s no definitive distribution plan for the U.S. yet, but a representative from Tecdesk told me the company is working on a deal with T-Mobile. The Smart 5500 is expected to cost $400, but I’m not sure if that’s with or without a carrier subsidization.
