Though its Build conference primarily focused on Windows 8.1 Update and Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft on Wednesday also rolled out an updated version of Internet Explorer 11.

The new browser will run on the updated Windows 8 as well as Windows 7, while Redmond is also debuting IE11 for Windows Phone 8.1.

The update means a better browsing experience, no matter what gadget you’re using: Be it an 8-inch tablet or a 24-inch desktop, IE11 adapts for the device, changing the number of on-screen tabs and the size of fonts and menus to match the machine.

“We’ve heard that people browse the Web on many devices, switching between their laptop, tablet, and phone throughout the day,” Sam George, IE Partner Group Program manager, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window). With that in mind, the IE team created a product that syncs your tabs and favorites, offering the same content on all devices, even Windows Phone 8.1.

On the new mobile OS, users benefit from updates including the ability to pin your favorite websites directly to your Start Screen via Live Sites, as well as Reading Mode to optimize article viewing and Voice Commands for quick access to apps.

IE11 for Windows Phone 8.1 also comes with InPrivate for secure browsing, and helps users better manage data usage—just enable the new High Savings Mode to reduce consumption by 60 to 80 percent. The feature reduces image downloads and loads only relevant page elements.

For developers, IE11 comes with a completely redesigned and enhanced suite of in-browser developer tools(Opens in a new window). Shortcuts to common tools and the flexibility to emulate various versions of IE are now available, alongside improved UI and Memory tools, and a handful of other features.

“While we are excited about today’s announcement we’re even more excited about the future,” George wrote. “As we begin working on the next generation of Internet Explorer for all of our devices we want to build a deeper partnership with users and Web developers.”
