Netatmo ‘Healthy Home Coach’ Keeps Tabs on Air Quality

Netatmo’s new smart thermometer does more than just tell the temperature. Called “Healthy Home Coach,” it offers you suggestions about how to improve indoor air quality, set the optimum temperature and humidity, and even make sure your kid’s bedroom is quiet enough for optimal sleep.

The $99 device, available now, is the latest foray into smart home technology from a company that sells weather stations and health sensors, including a piece of jewelry that helps protect your skin from the sun by alerting you when you’ve had too much exposure.

The home coach’s combination of health and high tech was prompted by the fact that indoor living spaces are three to eight times more polluted than outdoors, according to a company news release. The sensor tracks and records air quality, humidity, temperature, and noise in real time. If any of those parameters aren’t optimal—a poorly ventilated room, for instance, or high enough humidity that mold could grow—owners get a notification on the companion app, compatible with iOS 8 and above or Android 4.3 and later.

The Healthy Home Coach isn’t actually a thermostat, so you’ll have to manually act on its temperature recommendations. The tall cylinder doesn’t include a display, either, so you’ll have to fire up the app to check monitoring data.
