Whoops.
On the list of things Microsoft likely didn’t want to happen in the next week or so, you can safely add”have an Xbox One sent out early” to the list. Because that’s exactly what apparently has happened with one lucky pre-orderer. Well. Not just one.
Allegedly, Target has somehow mucked up the launch date for the Xbox One spoiler, it’s November 22 and in doing so, a few people have taken to the airwaves to confirm that they’ve received Xbox One consoles well in advance of the official release date. One of these astute early recipients of Microsoft’s to-be-released console took to eBay with a $10,000 listing, though it was later removed.
“Due to a systems error, Target shipped a small number of video game consoles prior to the street date,” a Target spokesperson said in a statement provided to Kotaku(Opens in a new window). “The vast majority of video game preorders are slated to arrive on the street date.”
YouTube’s Moonlight Swami(Opens in a new window) also received an early Xbox One ($200.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window). In addition to posting videos that have since been taken down by Microsoft, the intrepid gamer took to Twitter(Opens in a new window) to broadcast all sorts of details about the new console.
For example, the initial update that the Xbox One will receive on its launch day comes in at a cool 500MB, Swami says. The poster then went on a bit of a Marketplace binge, describing the various sizes of games being offered via Microsoft’s marketplace: Call of Duty: Ghosts eats up 39GB of space on your Xbox One’s 500GB drive, NBA 2K14 takes 43GB, and Ryse: Son of Rome eats up 34GB, to name a few.
Interestingly, it appears that Swami wasn’t the only one on the Xbox One at the time of his big detail dump. He said there were 112 people playing the Xbox One’s free iteration of Killer Instinct at the time of his postings internal testers, perhaps, or more of the lucky Target preorder crowd?
Well, sort-of lucky. While Swami was having fun doing things like timing out the Xbox One’s boot process (17 seconds!), it seems as if Microsoft was a little busy hunting down the upstart leaker. As mentioned, Redmond already went after the YouTube videos he shot of his new console. More importantly, it also banned his console outright from Xbox Live.
“Due to a retail partner’s system issue, a very small number of Xbox One consoles were shipped to consumers before the 11/22 street date,” Larry Hryb, Xbox Live’s Major Nelson, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window). “We’re pleased to see the initial response to Xbox One has been so positive, but given we are still putting the finishing touches on our games, UI and online services, as well as confidential partner and media agreements, these consoles units will be restricted from connecting to Xbox Live until closer to our launch date.”
That’s probably for the better, given that Swami’s fans were quick to take to Twitter to blast Microsoft representatives with comments that Swami, who did “way better PR wise for them than their overpaid marketing team,” said one Twitter user(Opens in a new window), should be allowed to access Xbox Live once again.
