Razer Unveils Its Lightest Mouse Ever, But It’s Pretty Expensive

Razer has created its lightest gaming mouse ever in the “Viper Mini Signature Edition,” which weighs a mere 49 grams (0.108 pounds).

The mouse is about 12 grams lighter than the standard Viper Mini, the company’s existing “ultra-lightweight” mouse. Razer decided to improve the design by using a perforated metal shell to cut down on the weight.

The goal was to create the best lightweight performance gaming mouse, Barrie Ooi, head of Razer’s Head of PC Gaming Division, said in the announcement(Opens in a new window). “We went beyond our usual design process to look at material selection and alternate industrial designs to create an ultra-durable magnesium alloy exoskeleton chassis in the fan-favorite Viper Mini shape,” he added.

The perforated shell mimics the “honeycomb” design of other lightweight gaming mice. However, Razer swapped out the plastic material for magnesium alloy to keep the device durable and still comfortable to use.

“After evaluating plastics, carbon fiber, and even titanium, we ultimately chose magnesium alloy for its exceptional properties,” said Razer’s Head of Industrial Design, Charlie Bolton. To create the metal casing, the company is relying on “an injection molding technique” to create the shell, which is then CNC machined and polished.

The result promises to feel premium in the hand. But the mouse won’t be cheap. The company will sell the first batch on Feb. 11 for $279.99 each. Razer is planning to make the first drop available on the company’s website at 8 p.m. PST that day. Users can sign up(Opens in a new window) for a notification.

In terms of specs, the mouse can operate both wirelessly and over a USB-C cable. The device features up to 60 hours in battery life and boasts Razer’s “Focus Pro 30K Optical Sensor,” which is capable of up to 30,000 in DPI sensitivity. Stay tuned for our review.
