Verizon Revives Droid Feed For a Game

[ad_1]

Verizon Wireless yesterday reactivated its @DroidLanding(Opens in a new window) Twitter feed with some seductive tweets (below) about new Droid products that might be arriving soon.

The Twitter feed then tweeted out a YouTube video (also below), which promotes something called “Droid Combat,” coming this month.

But sadly, Verizon says this isn’t a teaser for a phone launch. We asked Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney about the link, and she said, “the link was activated to announce a game.”

The game in question seems to be an augmented reality combat game (notice the flashing letters “AR” throughout the video) from game studio Munkyfun, which developed the “Bionic Arena” scavenger hunt game for Verizon’s Motorola Droid Bionic phone(Opens in a new window).

The “Droid” brand belongs to Verizon Wireless, not to any specific manufacturer. Verizon has slapped it on phones from Motorola, Samsung, and HTC in the past.

It’s been months since Verizon launched its last Droid-branded phone, the HTC Droid DNA. According to industry sources, the carrier had planned a “Droid DNA+” with similar specs to the HTC One before deciding to go with an official HTC One model instead, which doesn’t appear to have the Droid brand.

The new game could signal the run-up to a new Droid device, of course. If it’s coming this summer, it also won’t be the “Moto X,” which Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said in May is currently scheduled for October.

What do you think we’ll see from Verizon Wireless this summer?
