On Wednesday morning, HTC announced that it had purchased 51 percent of Beats Electronics, the audio company with some very famous backers and fans, for $300 million. HTC plans to add Beats audio to its products, but HTC phones and tablets won’t be the only places you can get the Beats sound experience.
To this point, Beats could be found in two places: Beats-branded headphones and speakers from Monster, and inside HP PCs and tablets. What Beats lacks in versatility of offerings, however, it more than makes up for in celeb saturation. Lady Gaga has her own pair of Beats headphones, as does Justin Bieber, and even Lebron James has a branded set. Nearly everywhere you look, too, there’s a famous person wearing Beats: At many post-pro-game press conferences, on every episode of American Idol (CEO Jimmy Iovine is even a mentor on the show), and just about everywhere else you turn, you can’t help but see the trademark red “b” over someone’s ears or around their neck.
In all likelihood, HTC is as interested in Beats’ brand power as it is in the technology itself, since Dr. Dre can probably sell cell phones as well as he sells Dr Pepper. But Beats does, in most cases, have true audio prowess to offer. Beats products are known for excellent sound, booming bass, and high-quality (and high-priced) devices. Laptops and desktops that include Beats have mostly software audio enhancements inside that improve audio performance in general but really shine when paired with Beats headphones or earphones.
If you want the audio bump Beats offers, but aren’t the market for a new HTC smartphone, you’re not out of luck. HTC might own 51 percent of Beats, but there’s still plenty of good products available from Monster and HP. We’ve rounded up 10 of the best ways to get Beats audio into your ears, right now.
