Amazon’s Echo device got the teardown treatment from iFixit(Opens in a new window), which scored the smart speaker a moderate seven out of 10 for repairability.

The Echo was unveiled last month, and interested buyers can request an invite to purchase(Opens in a new window) for $199 (Prime members save $100 for a limited time).

Coming in at 9.25 inches tall, the voice-activated speaker does more than just play music: It provides news and weather, creates to-do lists, sets timers and alarms, and even tells jokes.

The always-on device is connected to Wi-Fi, and reacts only when you say the “wake word” of your choice. The Echo can then answer questions like “What time is it?” or “How tall is Mount Everest?”

If you’re in the mood for some tunes, queue up a playlist from Amazon Music, Prime Music, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn; the Echo’s Bluetooth capabilities also mean mobile streaming from Spotify, iTunes, and Pandora.

Luckily, using Echo is a lot easier than disassembling it.

Amazon Echo teardownAs the iFixit team notes, Amazon has sealed the device tight, with no visible fasteners; you’ll have to peel off the rubber foot to peek inside. Remove four simple screws and pull the plate back to reveal the power and speaker driver board.

Reminiscent of a rocket, Echo comes in layers hidden by an outer shell, which can be removed with a steady hand, but must also peel off the vibration-dampening fabric.

Keep digging past the tweeter and woofer, each of which are held tight by a hefty magnet, and you’ll find the motherboard—fastened to the side of the tube much like Apple’s Mac Pro.

The actual speakers are hidden in the middle, under the swivel-top volume control and light ring, which iFixit called the Echo’s “true mouthpiece.” It’s actually the voice dial that contains a greased-up gear, similar to the one found in the Nest Learning Thermostat .

Amazon’s device comes with microphones that hear your commands and LEDs that indicate the speaker’s acknowledgement.

The good news is that the actual speaker component—the element most likely to fail—is replaceable. On the other hand, the “fairly complex” device comes without a repair manual and proves difficult to reassemble.

If you score an invitation from Amazon, the Echo comes with a free companion app for Fire and Android mobile devices, plus desktop and iOS browsers; start playing music on Echo from your phone, or manage alarms, music, and shopping lists.
