Jawbone today released a free software update for Big Jambox Bluetooth speaker that extends the system’s battery life, improves audio streaming for iOS devices, and gives users more control.

Most notably, Jawbone tacked two hours onto its already long-lasting battery, providing listeners with a full 17 hours of wireless enjoyment. According to the company, the added juice helps lessen the burden on connected devices, leaving more battery life for your iDevice to function.

Version 2.0 also includes new AAC support for iOS 6.1, delivering improved audio streaming with fewer dropouts and interruptions from greater distances, so even when your cell phone is in another room, the speaker will continue booming Kanye West in the bathroom as you shower.

And don’t worry about having access to the Jambox when the music gets too loud. Users can now control the sound level from either the speaker or a mobile device, without having to separately adjust the volume on both.

Meanwhile, the new Silent Mode allows streaming of music without the interruption of voice prompts and tones. By holding down the “Talk” and “Minus” buttons while powering up the Big Jambox, the machine will automatically disable all sounds other than your tunes and calls.

Additional performance improvements like LED response and connectivity for PS Vita are included in version 2.0, the first-ever update to the Big Jambox — the literal big brother to Jawbone’s lighter, original Jambox.

Jawbone suggests upgrading to iOS 6.1 before updating the speaker. The free software update is available online at mytalk.jawbone.com.

Along with the system upgrade, Jawbone is offering a limited-time $50 discount on the speaker, which retails for $300; consumers can pick one up until April 6 for $249.99.
