Report: Apple, Beats Ditched Plans for Sonos-Like Speaker

[ad_1]

A year after Apple purchased Beats Electronics for $3 billion, a new report suggests the companies were developing a Wi-Fi loudspeaker for subscription music services.

But Apple Music users shouldn’t hold their breath: According to Variety(Opens in a new window), the project was quashed post-acquisition.

Known for its headphones, Beats also manufactures pill-shaped Bluetooth speakers that sync with a smartphone to play stored and streaming tunes at home or on the go. But the imperfect science of Bluetooth offers only a limited range, and interrupts music with notifications and phone calls.

A wireless amplifier—like those produced by Sonos—however, would give users more freedom to jam out. As reported by Variety, Beats planned to build a bigger, more powerful living room speaker for $750, followed by a smaller, more affordable device for the kitchen and bedroom.

Citing people familiar with the now-dead project, the magazine said Apple’s Beats also wanted to combine Bluetooth with Wi-Fi and NFC for seamless transitions between rooms and gadgets.

But Beats struggled to realize the wireless-speaker vision—switching chipset vendors and more than once postponing the launch date. Sources told Variety that Cupertino simply scrapped the project, while others said it was put on hold.

A Cupertino spokeswoman declined to comment.
