Fujifilm is updating its entry-level X system camera, the X-A1 . The new model, predictably named the X-A2, uses the same 16-megapixel APS-C image sensor with a Bayer color filter array, but does include some refinements.
Chief among them is a tilting display that can swing all the way forward to selfies. Putting the screen in the selfie position activates face- and eye-detection focus, so your followers will get see you in sharp focus.
Other features, including integrated Wi-Fi, a contrast detection autofocus system, and a 5.5fps burst shooting rate carry over from the X-A1. The Classic Chrome film emulation mode has been added, as has support for direct printing to the Instax Share ($249.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) printer, a feature that’s standard in new Fuji cameras with Wi-Fi.
The X-A2 ships with an updated version of the Fujinon XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS ($399.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) zoom lens. The new lens, the XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS II, offers improved image stabilization and can focus as close as 15 centimeters. The X-A2 is priced at $549.95 with the 16-50mm lens. The camera will be available in black, brown, and white finishes.
There’s also a new XC lens, the Fujinon XC 50-230mm OIS II. It’s identical to the previous version of the lens, but offers improved image stabilization. Joining it are three new high-end Fujinon lenses. The XF 16mm F1.4, XF 90mm F2, and XF 140-400mm F4-5.6 WR OIS are all slated to join the X family over the course of the year. Release dates for these lenses haven’t yet been finalized, and Fuji says that it is possible that the release of the 140-400mm may slip to early 2016.
Joining the X-A2 in the X series is the new XQ2 fixed-lens compact camera. It’s an update to the XQ1 ($499.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) that improves autofocus speed, adds Classic Chrome film emulation, and supports underwater shooting via an optional external housing. Like its predecessor, the XQ2 uses a 2/3-inch X-Trans CMOS II image sensor and has a lens that covers a 25-100mm zoom range with an f/1.8-4.9 variable aperture. The XQ2 includes integrated Wi-Fi, and its autofocus system uses both phase and contrast detection for quick performance. It’s priced at $399.95 and will go on sale in February in black, white, and two-tone chrome and black color schemes.
Other new compacts include the FinePix XP80, a rugged camera that’s rated for use at depths of 50 feet. It’s a 16-megapixel CMOS shooter with a 28-140m lens, integrated Wi-Fi, and an Action Cam mode that’s meant to work along with an 18mm wide-angle lens adapter. The XP80 is priced at $229.95 and will go on sale in March in blue, black, or yellow. The wide-angle lens adapter is just $49.95 more.
There are also a pair of new bridge-style superzooms. The S9900W and S9800 are virtually identical—the S9900W has Wi-Fi, but the S9800 does not. Key features include a 50x zoom lens, 5-axis image stabilization, a 920k-dot EVF, and a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor. The S9900W is priced at $329.95 and the S9800 at $299.95. Both will ship in March.
