LAS VEGAS—Like many camera makers, Fujifilm is a bit quiet at CES this year, but it is using the trade show to launch a new, pro-level standard zoom lens for its X mirrorless camera system.
The Fujinon XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR features an all-weather design and covers a 24-84mm field of view in full-frame terms when paired with an APS-C X series camera like the company’s flagship model, the X-T1 ($1,299.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) . The X-T1 (and the X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition) are both sealed against dust and moisture as well, making this a zoom in which owners of those cameras will be keenly interested.
The lens has a complex design that incorporates 17 lens elements arranged in 12 groups, with three aspherical lens elements that are there to minimize spherical aberration and distortion, as well as 3 ED glass elements that minimize lateral and axial chromatic aberration—that means that the lens should do a good job minimizing purple color fringing that can plague high-contrast scenes.
A 9-blade aperture will create round, smooth bokeh when the lens is stopped down, and it can be controlled in third-stop increments. Close focus is also a strong point, as the lens has a working distance of about 12 inches throughout its zoom range, so you’ll be able to blur the background, even when shooting at a wider angle. The internal focus motor can drive the lens elements to lock focus in as little as 0.06 seconds and is nearly silent, which is good news for videographers.
The Fujinon XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR is set to ship in February. It’s a pro lens and is priced like one; Fujifilm expects it to sell for about $1,200.
