Fujifilm X30 Trades Optical Finder for EVF

The Fujifilm X20 ( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) was one of the few remaining compact cameras with an optical viewfinder, and the only one with a viewfinder that we’d call great, but it looks like it’s the last of a dying breed. Its successor, the X30, omits the big, bright, zooming optical viewfinder and replaces it with what Fujifilm is calling a Real Time Viewfinder—a 2.4-megapixel OLED EVF that appears larger to your eye than the finders in many SLRs.

The X30 uses the same 12-megapixel 2/3-inch X-Trans CMOS II image sensor as its predecessor, and the same 28-112mm f/2-2.8 manual zoom lens. There’s an additional control ring around the lens, which can be used to adjust aperture, shutter speed, or ISO, depending on which mode the camera is set to, and there’s still a dedicated mode dial and a dedicated exposure compensation dial.

The rear display is now hinged. It’s a 3-inch LCD panel with a 920k-dot resolution, which is the minimum you’d expect in a premium compact camera like this one. Its body is constructed from magnesium alloy, and it’s going to be available in black or chrome versions. Like many Fuji cameras, the X30 uses an X-Trans CMOS sensor. It has a more complex 6-by-6 color filter array, compared with the traditional 4-by-4 Bayer pattern, which leads to more natural-looking images and improved image quality at higher ISO sensitivities.

The wide aperture lens captures a lot of light, even when zoomed, so you can keep the ISO down when shooting. Its 4x zoom range isn’t the longest in the world, but the lens is optically stabilized and, when focused close, manages to create a stunning out-of-focus bokeh effect thanks to a shallow plane of focus.

Images can be shot in Raw or JPG format, and if you shoot in JPG you have the option of emulating classic Fujifilm analog stocks, including Provia, Velvia, and Astia. There’s a new film emulation mode in the X30, Classic Chrome, which captures images with muted tones and saturated color. Wi-Fi is built in, a feature that the X20 lacked, so you can transfer photos to your phone, or control the camera remotely via a free iOS or Android app.

The X30 is priced at $599.95 and will be available in late September.
