Just over a year ago, Leica announced that Apple designer Jonathan “Jony” Ive would produce a special edition Leica M to be auctioned off for charity.
That device is now finally going up for auction(Opens in a new window) at Sotheby’s on Nov. 23, and money raised for the special-edition (RED) Leica M will benefit The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
“From a design standpoint, it features a laser machined aluminum body and an anodized aluminum outer shell. A total of 561 models and nearly 1000 prototype parts were made during the 85 days it took to create of this unique, one of a kind camera,” Leica said on its Google+ page(Opens in a new window).
The camera includes a full-format CMOS sensor, high performance processor, and new Leica APO-Summicron M 50mm f/2 ASPH lens, which represents “the best in photography along with its innovative design.”
The camera won’t be the only thing available at Sotheby’s. Ive collaborated with industrial designer Marc Newsom as well as musician Bono to auction 40 items that celebrate the “best of design and innovation.” There will also be a one-of-a-kind pair of Apple EarPods in solid rose gold, as well as a Steinway & Sons Parlor Grand Piano and 2012 Range Rover, both customized by Ive and Newsom.
You can also bid on an Hermès Cavale saddle in red leather with custom red stitching, a Russian cosmonaut suit, a pair of Damien Hirst “Spin Chairs” designed by Jasper Morrison, a custom Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos “561” Clock with unique red accents created for the auction, and a Dom Pérignon nothèque 1966 Magnum with custom red foil label, red ice bucket cooler and limited edition protective case.
“Each piece represents the value of thoughtful design,” Ive said in a statement. “What we create for each other is not only a comment on our culture but of course in many ways defines it. (RED) is making a difference in the lives of millions of people and we’re humbled to make this contribution to such an important and worthy cause.”
A similar Sotheby’s (RED) auction in in Feb. 2008 raised more than $40 million.
