Olympus this week announced the U.S. availability of its new Stylus XZ-10 compact camera, which was previously announced for sale in European markets.

The small shooter is in many ways a scaled down version of the XZ-2($469.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) enthusiast camera. It offers many of the features of the XZ-2, including a sharp rear touch screen and Raw shooting support, but keeps costs under control via the use of a smaller 1/2.3-inch 12-megapixel BSI-CMOS image sensor. That’s the standard size in most digital cameras—the XZ-2 features a larger 1/1.7-inch sensor.

The XZ-10 has a 5x zoom lens, which covers a 26-130mm f/1.8-2.7 range in terms of traditional 35mm photography. The f/1.8 aperture is extremely fast for a camera in this class—it captures twice the light as compacts that start at f/2.5. The ISO can be set as high as 6400, so you’ll be able to capture shots without motion blur in dimmer settings. Its rear LCD display is 3 inches in size, is touch-sensitive, and boasts a 920k-dot resolution. It’s possible to focus and fire the camera simply by tapping an area on the rear display.

Video is recorded in up to 1080p quality in H.264 QuickTime format. There’s a stereo microphone, and a 120fps mode that is perfect for capturing slow-motion video. The Multi-Motion Movie IS stabilization system works to reduce camera shake when recording video.

There are also a number of art filters built into the camera, a staple on recent offerings from Olympus. Available effects include Pop Art, Soft Focus, Grainy Film, and Cross Processing—all of which will alter the look and color palette of your images.

There’s no Wi-Fi built into the XZ-10, but it does offer support for Eye-Fi and Toshiba FlashAir memory cards. Adding either type of card to the camera makes it possible to wirelessly transfer photos to a smartphone, computer, or other Wi-Fi device.

The SZ-10 is set to ship in the U.S. in late March. It will be available in black for $399.99.
