LAS VEGAS—Olympus has long been a class leader in rugged cameras, and it is putting its best foot forward with a trio of new tough point-and-shoot cameras. The Tough TG-2 iHS is the successor to 2012’s TG-1($249.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window)—a camera that impressed us enough to earn our Editors’ Choice award. The TG-2 packs the same 25-100mm f/2-4.9 lens and 12-megapixel CMOS sensor. The minor improvements include an increased depth rating—you can now take it as deep as 50 feet—and a super macro zoom mode that is capable of 14:1 magnification. The camera has a built-in GPS and a sharp 3-inch 610k-dot OLED rear display. It is rated to survive drops from 6.6 feet, is crushproof to 220 foot-pounds, and freezeproof to 14°F. It will be available in black or red and is priced at $379.99—$20 less than its predecessor.

Also joining the Tough family are the TG-830 and TG-630. The former uses a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 5x zoom lens, and a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD. It is waterproof to 33 feet, shockproof to 6.6 feet, crushproof to 220 foot-pounds, and dustproof. There’s a built-in GPS and compass as well. It will be available in blue, red, silver, or black for $279.99.

The TG-630 is very similar to the TG-830—it uses the same lens and rear LCD, and, aside from not being crushproof, is just as rugged. It doesn’t have a GPS and its image sensor is 12-megapixels rather than 16. It is priced at only $199.99 and will be available in black, red, white, or blue.

The SH-50 iHS is a 16-megapixel compact superzoom. It has a 24x lens, a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, and can record 1080p video. Its 25-600mm f/3-6.9 lens isn’t the fastest in the world, but the camera uses the 3-axis still stabilization and a 5-axis video stabilization system that was developed for the top-end OM-D E-M5($749.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) Micro Four Thirds camera for sharper photos and smoother video. It is priced at $299.99.

The final two superzooms are the similar SZ-16 and SZ-15. The SZ-16 is priced at $229.99 and features  a 14-megapixel CMOS image sensor with a TruePic VI image processor that is capable of capturing 1080p video. The $199.99 SZ-15 uses a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, but can only manage 720p video as it has an older TruePic III+ processor. Both cameras uses a 25-600mm 24x zoom lens and a 3-inch 460k-dot rear LCD. The SZ-16 will be available in white or black, while the SZ-15 ships in red, silver, or black.

All of Olympus’s new cameras will be available in March.
