Watch out, GoPro. HTC is reportedly developing an action camera of its own.
HTC’s first-ever camera, currently in development, is a waterproof shooter designed for extreme sports, according to Bloomberg(Opens in a new window), which cited an unnamed source familiar with the plans. The camera will feature a 16-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens, and connect to Android and iOS devices for easy uploading.
An HTC spokesperson declined to comment.
HTC is reportedly eyeing the action camera market in a bid to find new sources of revenue after facing a dozen consecutive quarters of dwindling sales.
The camera, described by Bloomberg as “tube-shaped,” is also said to include support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi so it can connect to smartphones. The company may also release an accompanying iOS and Android app alongside the new camera.
HTC may unveil the phone at an Oct. 8 press event in New York. The company earlier this week sent out invitations for the event with the tagline “double exposure.”
The news comes after Ricoh this week entered the action camera market with the WG-M1, which is waterproof to 32.8 feet (10 meters) without the need for an external housing, dust proof, cold proof to 14°F (-10°C), and protected against drops from heights of 6.6 feet (2 meters). Meanwhile, GoPro is bringing action cameras to the pet set with its new Fetch dog harness, which lets you strap a camera onto your furry friend to see the world through his or her eyes.
