Ron Howard is unfolding a director’s chair just for you. The famed actor, director, and producer is teaming up with Canon(Opens in a new window) for the Project Imaginat10n Film Contest(Opens in a new window).
Filmmakers of all skill sets are invited to vie for their own spot in the festival, next to five celebrity directors, including Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.
Participants must choose 10 images from a pool of 91 crowd-sourced photos(Opens in a new window), then create a short film inspired by them. Oh, and it must be based on 10 storytelling themes: character, mood, goal, backstory, setting obstacle, relationship, the unknown, time, and discovery. The final “discovery” photo, as selected by Howard, will be the same in each film.
Alongside Stone’s short film, entries will include projects by actress Eva Longoria, actor Jamie Foxx, designer Georgina Chapman, and LCD Soundsystem founder James Murphy. The film festival will also include five submitted movies, chosen out of a pile of 20 finalists.
The contest is an offshoot of 2011’s “Project Imagin8ion,”(Opens in a new window) in which Bryce Dallas Howard, mentored by her father, created a short film inspired by photographs. From eight winning photos, Bryce directed when you find me, about sisters whose childhood bond is tested by a tragedy.
“Directing when you find me was one of the most creatively rewarding endeavors of my career,” Dallas Howard said in a statement. “In addition to the amazing experience of being mentored by my dad, the chance to collaborate with such a vast community of artists and photographers was game changing and challenged the very paradigm of the filmmaking I had grown accustomed to.”
Utilizing her experience as the “first graduating director” of the Project Imagin8ion experiment, Canon said, Dallas Howard will act as a mentor to other filmmakers by speaking at film schools, and providing tips in an webisode series creatively dubbed “Bryce’s Project Imaginat10n Film Contest Tutorial.”
“My hope for the Project Imaginat10n film contest is that aspiring filmmakers will feel empowered to showcase their work and explore their own creativity,” she said. “I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to engage with the filmmakers and support them as they embark on this powerful odyssey into creativity and collaboration.”
Submissions will be accepted starting June 4 at imagination.usa.canon.com(Opens in a new window), and will be appraised by a panel of judges based on overall technical quality, originality, use of imagination, and impression. The Howard father-daughter team will then select the winning five films and package them with the celebrity-directed pieces as “A Ron Howard Presentation.”
All 10 films will be showcased at Canon’s Project Imaginat10n Film Festival in the fall.
Ron Howard, meanwhile, is also an executive producer (and narrator) on Arrested Development, which will return for a final season on Netflix next month.
