A few products have hit the market that promise the use of big camera lenses with cell phones, notably the iPhone SLR Mount, but they’re unilaterally limited to manual focus and use your phone’s small lens and image sensor to actually capture a photo.
Sony wants to change that with its newest smartphone add-on, the Cyber-shot QX1.
Like the QX10 ($258.00 at Walmart)(Opens in a new window) and QX100 ( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) before it, the QX1 is a full-functional camera, but one without an LCD display or most of the physical controls you’ll typically find on a camera. The QX1 also omits a lens—it’s just an E-mount, the same type you’ll find in the Sony Alpha 6000 ($549.99 at Dell Technologies)(Opens in a new window) —so you can use any lens that you’d normally use on an Alpha mirrorless camera. The image sensor is an APS-C chip with 20 megapixels of resolution and a contrast-detect autofocus system, just like you’ll find in the Alpha 3000 ($499.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) .
To see what the QX1 is seeing, you’ll need to pair with an Android or iOS device via the free Sony PlayMemories Mobile app. From there you can control settings, adjust the zoom position of the lens when using a power zoom model, and take pictures. The QX1 has a few features that were missing from earlier models, including the ability to shoot in Raw format when saving photos to a memory card and a built-in pop-up flash. It’s going to ship in November and is priced at $399 as a body only; you’ll have to buy a lens separately.
Also coming to the QX line is the QX30, a module with a standard compact image sensor (1/1.2.3-inch) and a lens with a 30x zoom ratio. The lens covers a 24-720mm range (full-frame equivalent) with an aperture that starts at f/3.5 at the wide end and narrows to f/6.3 when fully zoomed. The QX30 can capture 20-megapixel JPG images and 1080p60 video in MP4 format. It’s set to go on sale this month for $349.
Rounding out the slate of new products is the Action Cam Mini HDR-AZ1, a smaller version of Sony’s rugged video camera. The new camera is noticeably smaller than the standard Action Cam ( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) , by about 30 percent, but maintains many of the features of its larger sibling. These include the ability to capture wide-angle 1080p footage with image stabilization, XAVC S recording at 50Mbps, an MP4 recording option, Ustream support, and frame rates up to 120fps. Its body is splashproof, and includes an underwater housing that’s rated to go as deep as 16 feet.
The Mini is compatible with Sony’s existing Live View Remote wristwatch, as well as the new Live View Remote (RM-LVR2V). It’s almost identical to the previous version, with a small LCD screen and recording controls, but it adds integrated GPS. The GPS works with the included Action Cam Movie Creator software package to add location data to your movies. The remote can control up to five Action Cams.
A number of new mounts will be available for the Action Cam line, including the VCT-BPM1 Backpack Mount, the PLT-CHM1 hat mount, and the VCT-QHM football helmet mount.
The Action Cam Mini is going on sale in October. It’s priced at $249 when purchased on its own, or at $349 in a kit with the Live View Remote.
