3D printing has become a valuable tool for tech-savvy artists and designers, and this year MecklerMedia, organizer of the Inside 3D Printing conferences that take place in various cities, had this artistic side front and center.

Alongside the Inside 3D Printing New York show that’s been held for the past several years in the Javits Center is the 3D Print Design Show, which fills an additional room and effectively doubles the size of the show. It features 3D-printed works by sculptors, jewelers, toymakers, and even musical instrument makers. A 3D Print Fashion Show was also held Thursday night.

That said, there was plenty of room for the 3D printers themselves. Old favorites like Stratasys, MakerBot, and 3D Systems were back, as was FormLabs, creater of the Form 1+ stereolithography 3D printer. EnvisionTEC brought its own line of stereolithography 3D printers to the show this year, and M3D showed off The Micro, the cutest miniature 3D printer you’d ever hope to see.

There were 3D scanners as well. Artec manufactures and sells the Artec Shapify Booth, which it sees as the 21st Century equivalent of the photo booth, a way of creating a souvenir figurine to commemorate weddings, graduations, or other events.

Staples and the UPS store were on hand to tell people how they are integrating 3D printing into their operations. Staples sells 3D printers and supplies online and offers 3D-printing services in a limited number of stores. UPS has also added 3D printing services in nearly 100 of its outlets.

There have always been some artists with their wares on display at Inside 3D Printing, but including a design show along with the display of 3D printing hardware adds a new dimension to the event, and shows off some wonderful creations. But of all the things on exhibit, one item stood out as the most wicked-cool: the 3D-printed piezoelectric violin from Monad Studio (above). If that’s the shape of classical music to come, we’re all ears. Check out the slideshow to what else was on offer.
