The Acer H277HU ($499.99) is the first USB-C-equipped monitor to come to PC Labs, and it’s a beauty. Decked out in white, with gold-colored aluminum trim, this 27-inch In-Plane Switching (IPS) display provides sharp WQHD (2,560-by-1,440) imagery and brings USB 3.1 connectivity to the monitor. It also delivers very good gray-scale performance and offers advanced settings that allow you to fine-tune its color output. Design and Features

uses the same elegant zero-bezel design as the Acer H257HU ($369.99 at Acer)(Opens in a new window) , but instead of a black cabinet with silver trim, this model has a white cabinet with gold trim. The 9-pound cabinet is supported by an aluminum, ring-shaped base that provides 20 degrees of tilt, but lacks height, swivel, and pivot adjustability. The 27-inch IPS panel has a maximum resolution of 2,560 by 1,440 and uses a non-reflective coating and flicker-free technology to reduce glare and eyestrain.
The rear of the cabinet holds HDMI and DisplayPort video inputs, as well as a USB-C port, and two USB 3.1 ports that feature USB Type A connectors, making them backward-compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices. Two 3-watt speakers provide relatively loud audio, but not a lot of bass.
There are five function buttons and a Power switch positioned on the lower-right edge of the cabinet. The function buttons provide access to, and let you navigate, the settings menus, which offer picture adjustments, such as Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Color Temperature, and Sharpness. Acer covers the H277HU with a three-year warranty on parts, labor, and backlight, and includes a Quick Start Guide, a USB-C cable, an HDMI cable, and a DisplayPort cable in the box.
Performance
The H277HU is a strong performer. It aced the DisplayMate 64-Step Gray-Scale test and displayed excellent highlight and shadow detail in my test images. Colors appeared rich against the panel’s dark blacks, and as with any good IPS panel, viewing angles were wide, with no noticeable color shifting.

As shown on the chromaticity chart below, the panel’s green and blue colors (represented by the colored dots) are closely aligned with their ideal CIE coordinates (represented by the boxes). Red, on the other hand, runs a little hot and is outside of its box. Despite the flaw, I didn’t notice any highlight or gray-scale tinting, and I was able to correct it using the 6-Axis color settings.
The panel’s 4-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response did a relatively good job of preventing motion blur in my Crysis 3 (PC) and Grand Theft Auto V (Sony Playstation 4 ($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) ) gaming tests, but it did not eliminate it completely. Input lag (the time it takes for the monitor to react to a controller command) was negligible at 9.9 milliseconds. The BenQ SW2700PT and the BenQ XL2430T ($449.00 at Walmart)(Opens in a new window) monitors remain the fastest we’ve tested (9.5 milliseconds).
The HU277HU consumed 34 watts of power in testing while set to Standard mode and 26 watts while set to ECO mode. That’s much more efficient than the Acer Predator XB271HK ($586.46 at Newegg)(Opens in a new window) (52 watts and 40 watts, respectively) and the BenQ SW2700PT (43 watts in Standard mode).
Conclusion
The Acer H277HU brings lots of style and connectivity to your desktop while providing a sharp WQHD picture that looks great from every angle. Moreover, if you have a laptop or desktop PC that is equipped with a USB-C port, you can enjoy potential transfer rates of up to 10Gbps. Thanks to its strong gray-scale performance, the H277HU offers solid highlight and shadow detail, and while its red-color accuracy was a bit off in our testing, you can always use the advanced 6-Axis settings to fine-tune color output.
