Phil Schiller recently sat down for an extensive interview with gadget magazine T3(Opens in a new window), during which he discussed everything from the iPhone X and Face ID to AirPods and the delayed HomePod smart speaker. Schiller also hinted that the iMac Pro launch was only days away, and now Apple has confirmed it launches on Dec. 14.
Apple says the iMac Pro is the “most powerful Mac ever,” so it’s priced accordingly at $5,000. It was always meant to launch this month, but with the HomePod delay, nobody was holding their breath for a Pro before Christmas. However, Apple is set to deliver that most powerful of Macs aimed at creative professionals before the week is over.
As it did with iPhone X, Apple allowed some YouTubers early access to the iMac Pro so you can take a closer look at it before ordering.
What’s on offer is a 27-inch display with a 5,120-by-2,880-pixel resolution and 500nits brightness. The Intel Xeon processor will be available with 8-, 10-, and 18-core options, complimented by 32, 64, or 128GB of 2,666MHz DDR4 ECC memory. A 1TB SSD comes standard, but 2TB and 4TB SSD options are available. And then we have the graphics chip, which is an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 56 processor with 8GB of HBM2 memory. If that’s not good enough, there’s a Vega 64 chip with 16GB of HBM2 available.
Audio is handled by stereo speakers, but there is a headphone jack. A 1080p FaceTime HD camera is complemented by four built-in microphones, and it’s possible to connect up to four 4K external displays or two 5K displays if 27 inches isn’t enough for you. Apple also included 10Gb Ethernet, four Thunderbolt USB-C ports, four standard USB 3 ports, and an SDXC card slot (with UHS-II support) on the back. Wireless connectivity comes in the form of 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2.
The iMac Pro will run macOS High Sierra, and Apple included all the peripherals you need in the box to get up and running. They include a Space Gray Magic Keyboard with Numeric Pad, Space Gray Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB cable, and the essential power cord.
The Apple website has been updated to include an iMac Pro section(Opens in a new window) along with the Dec. 14 launch date. If you want the 18-core iMac Pro, though, it won’t be available until early next year.
Until then, you can’t pre-order or add one to your basket in anticipation. Even with the $5,000 starting price, I suspect the available stock will disappear very quickly on launch day, but Apple’s retail stores are sure to get some stock, too.
