[ad_1]

The Canon imageClass MF419dw ($599) is a monochrome laser all-in-one printer that’s capable of medium- to heavy-duty printing in a micro or small office. It offers good standard and optional paper capacity, a wide range of connectivity choices, and good text quality. The MF419dw’s Achilles’ heel is its high toner costs; although its output quality is better than that of the Brother MFC-L6700DW ($685.45 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) , it costs twice as much to print each page than with that Editors’ Choice model if you use each printer’s highest-yield cartridges.

Design and Features
Measuring 18.3 by 17.7 by 18.6 inches (HWD) and weighing 47 pounds with toner cartridge in place, the MF419dw ($2,461.76 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) requires a table or bench of its own, and you will probably want two people to move it into place. Its front panel includes an alphanumeric keypad for entering fax numbers and other information, a 3.5-inch color touch-screen LCD, and buttons identified by both words and icons, including Home, Back, Start, Stop, and Energy Saver. The port for the USB thumb drive is on the front of the printer to the left of the output tray, just below the front panel.

Standard paper capacity is 550 sheets, split between a 500-sheet main paper tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose feeder. The MF419dw can take up to two additional 500-sheet trays ($199 each), for a maximum paper capacity of 1,550 sheets. There’s an automatic duplexer for two-sided printing, to which the printer is set by default as a paper-saving measure. Standard paper capacity is just a tad short of the Brother MFC-L6700DW’s, at 570 sheets, split between a 520-sheet main tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose feeder; the maximum capacity is 1,610 sheets with the addition of two optional 520-sheet trays. The Canon imageClass MF416dw ($1,318.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is limited to a 300-sheet standard paper capacity and a maximum of 800 sheets.

For scanning, the MF419dw is equipped with both a legal-size flatbed and a 50-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF), which lets users copy, scan, or fax both sides of multipage documents. It first scans one side of a document, flips it over, and then scans the other side. Both flatbed and ADF can handle legal-size documents. The Canon MF416dw has a smaller (letter-size) flatbed, and the same ADF. The OKI MB472w ($1,528.53 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) has a similar 50-sheet duplexing ADF. The Brother MFC-L6700DW and HP M426fdw have 70- and 50-sheet ADFs, respectively, but they scan both sides of a two-sided document at once, a much faster procedure.

The MF419dw offers Ethernet, USB, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, connectivity. It also supports making a direct, peer-to-peer connection with a compatible device via Wi-Fi Direct. Mobile protocols and services supported include Apple AirPrint, Mopria Print Service, Canon Print Business, and Google Cloud Print. Printer drivers include Canon’s host-based (UFR II) driver, as well as PCL6 and PostScript. I tested the printer over an Ethernet connection with its drivers installed on a PC running Windows 10 Professional.

Printing Speed
In its default duplex printing mode, the MF419dw averaged 18.9 pages per minute (ppm) in printing the text-only (Word) portion of our new business applications suite, a little faster than its 17ppm rated speed. In printing the full suite, which includes PDF, PowerPoint, and Excel files in addition to the aforementioned Word document, it averaged 11.1ppm. These times were similar to those of the Canon MF416dw, which we clocked at 17.2ppm on the text document and 11.5ppm on the entire suite.

In ad-hoc testing in simplex (one-sided) printing mode, the MF419dw printed our text document at 28.7ppm, a bit short of its 35ppm simplex speed rating, though still respectable. In printing our full business suite, it averaged 16.4ppm. The Brother MFC-L6700DW smoked these tests, averaging 47.1ppm on the text-only portion of our tests, in line with its 48ppm rated speed, and 23.8ppm across our full test suite.

Output Quality
Overall output quality was a little better than average for a mono laser, with above-par text, and average graphics and photos. The MF419dw’s text should be fine for any use except those requiring tiny fonts.

Most graphics look reasonably good, though the MF419dw had problems in printing out gradients, and a close look at many illustrations revealed substantial dithering (graininess). Photo quality is good enough for printing out images from webpages.

Running costs, based on Canon’s price and yield figures for toner, are 3 cents per page. This matches the Canon MF416dw but is twice as high as the Editors’ Choice Brother MFC-L6700DW (1.5 cents per page). It is also significantly higher than the HP M426fdw’s 2.2 cents per page.

Conclusion
The Canon imageClass MF419dw is a capable monochrome laser all-in-one printer for heavy-duty use in a micro office and up to medium-duty use in a small office. Its standard and optional paper capacities are good, and it prints sharp text. The MF419dw delivers better text and graphics quality than the Brother MFC-L6700DW, but is considerably slower, and its cost per page is double that of that Editors’ Choice model. The MF419dw is best for somewhat lighter-duty use where running costs won’t be as significant a factor but where text and graphics quality are important.
