Canon Pixma MG7720 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One Review

[ad_1]

The Canon Pixma MG7720 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One ($199.99) delivers absolutely top-tier photo quality, thanks in large part to using six ink tanks, with cyan, yellow, magenta, black, photo black, and gray inks. That gives it extraordinarily high photo quality for an inkjet multifunction printer (MFP) and makes it a strong candidate if you’re particularly interested in printing photos. Even better, it delivers high quality for text and graphics, making it a reasonable choice for the dual role of home and home-office printer, at least for light-duty needs.

The MG7720 ($969.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is part of the same line of Canon’s photo inkjet MFPs as the Canon Pixma MG6820 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One ($799.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) and the Canon Pixma MG5720 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One ($586.45 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) , which is our Editors’ Choice budget MFP weighted toward home use. All three offer above-par photo quality for an inkjet MFP, but the MG7720 is the only one of the three that adds gray ink, giving it just a touch higher quality for color photos and significantly higher quality for black and white photos.

Other extras include the ability to print on printable optical discs, Ethernet added to Wi-Fi and USB as a connection choice, and NFC support for setting up direct wireless connections easily to NFC-capable mobile devices. The MG7720 also offers a slightly better claimed speed than the other two, but the difference isn’t enough to show on our tests. All three models came in at the same speed in pages per minute (ppm) on our business-applications suite, and the MG7720 was slower than the other two for printing photos.

Basics
At 17 pounds 6 ounces and 5.9 by 17.2 by 14.6 inches (HWD), the MG7720 is easy to find room for. The one I tested is an attractive deep red bordering on burgundy, and it’s also available in black, white, and tan, so you can pick a color to match your decor.

Basic MFP features are limited to printing, scanning, and copying, including printing on optical discs. In addition you can print from, but not scan to, memory cards. The 3.5-inch color touch screen lets you both preview photos before printing and give commands easily.

Like most recent Canon Pixma printers, the MG7720 offers Wireless PictBridge, which Canon says is available on all of its recent camera models that offer Wi-Fi. There’s no USB Type A port, however, which means you can’t connect to a PictBridge camera via USB cable or print from a USB memory key.

The printer also supports mobile printing and scanning. Connect it to a network using either Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and you can print from and scan to iOS, Android, and Windows phones and tablets through an access point on the network, as well as print though the cloud—assuming the network is connected to the Internet. If you download the Canon Print App to your phone or tablet, you can also give commands to specific websites—including Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook, and Twitter—to send print jobs from those sites directly to the printer.

Connect the printer via USB cable rather than to a network, and you won’t be able to print through the cloud or from websites, but you’ll still be able to print from and scan to mobile devices by connecting directly using Canon’s equivalent to Wi-Fi Direct. If your phone or tablet supports NFC, you can even connect simply by tapping the device to the clearly labeled NFC logo on the top right of the printer.

Paper capacity is sufficient for personal use, but surprisingly low for this expensive a printer. The single 125-sheet tray for standard paper, plus a second tray for 20 sheets of 4-by-6-inch photo paper or 10 sheets of 5-by-7-inch paper, has the advantage of letting you switch between photos and documents without having to change paper each time, but it’s still meager enough to limit the printer to light-duty use. The automatic duplexer (for two-sided printing) is a welcome extra. For scanning, however, there’s no automatic document feeder (ADF), which is in keeping with the printer’s general emphasis on home, rather than office-centric, features.

Setup Woes
As with both the Canon MG5720 and the Canon MG6820, you’ll need to set aside more time for setup with the MG7720 than with most printers. Physical setup is typical for the breed, but software installation can be time consuming. You can install the drivers and other software from a disc the printer comes with, but the layout of the Getting Started guide makes it easy to miss that critical piece of information. The main flow of instructions tells you to go to Canon’s website instead and download everything.

Downloading ensures that you install the latest versions. In my tests, however, it took an annoyingly long time for all three printers, even with a broadband connection with a promised 75 Mbps download speed. The one consolation is that you only have to do this once—or, at least, once for each computer you’ll be printing from. You might want to start the download and then do something else for a while, coming back every 15 or 20 minutes to check on the progress.

Speed and Output Quality
The MG7720’s print speed is tolerable, but slow for the price. I clocked it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic’s(Opens in a new window) hardware and software for timing), at just 2.6 pages per minute—the same speed I saw with the Canon MG5720 and Canon MG6820.

Canon Pixma MG7720 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One

On the plus side, that’s a touch faster than the 2.4ppm I timed for the Canon Pixma MX922 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer ($478.97 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) , which is our Editors’ Choice mainstream inkjet MFP for home use. However, it’s significantly slower than the Brother MFC-J870DW, our pick for mainstream office-centric MFP for home, SOHO, or dual-purpose use, which I measured at 4.7ppm. Photo speed is relatively better compared with inkjet MFPs in general, averaging 1 minute 4 seconds for a 4 by 6.

Output quality is above par overall, partly because of the high-quality photos, but also thanks to better quality text than most inkjet MFPs, as well as graphics quality at the high end of the range than includes the vast majority of inkjets. The text is easily good enough for any standard business need. Graphics are at a level that most people would consider good enough to hand out to clients or customers they wanted to impress with a sense of their professionalism.

Photo quality falls in a category we broadly describe as better-than-typical drugstore prints, but not a match for the most expensive inkjets aimed at professional photographers. Compared with top standard inkjets, however, the MG7720 is at the top of the pack, with a small, but noticeable step up in quality from most of the competition.

Conclusion
If you need an ADF or fax capability along with high-quality output, consider the Canon MX922. If you don’t need either of those extras or an Ethernet connector, and can do with just a smidge lower quality for photos, be sure to take a look at the Canon MG5720 if you don’t need to print from memory cards or the Canon MG6820 if you do. The Canon Pixma MG7720 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One should be on your shortlist, however, if you want particularly high-quality photos for an inkjet MFP, along with high-quality text and graphics, and also want to connect via Ethernet.
