Inkjet all-in-one printers aimed at home users are generally better at printing photos than text. The Canon Pixma TS8020 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One Printer ($179.99) actually excels at both, and its graphics output is good too. It lacks features essential for home office use, such as an automatic document feeder (ADF), Ethernet, and fax capability, all of which you’ll find in the likes of the Brother MFC-J985DW ($592.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) . But the TS8020’s high-quality photo printing and outstanding overall output quality make it a good fit for home users, and in that role it earns our Editors’ Choice.
Design and Features
The TS8020 is a three-function all-in-one printer, able to print, scan, and copy, but not fax. It comes in your choice of four colors: black (like our test unit), white, red, or brown. It measures a petite 5.5 by 14.7 by 12.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 14.3 pounds. The front panel, which can be tilted upward for easy access, includes a 4.3-inch color touch LCD.
Paper handling consists of a 100-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet rear feeder. The TS8020 also includes a tray for direct printing onto optical discs. It has an auto-duplexer for two-sided printing. On top is a letter-size flatbed scanner, but it lacks an ADF. To the left of the output tray is a slot for an SD card.

Mobile Printing Features
The TS8020 can connect directly to a computer via USB, or to a network via Wi-Fi. It also supports near field communication (NFC) direct printing from a compatible Android device. It is AirPrint compatible and Mopria certified for direct printing from iOS and compatible Android devices, and can print from the Canon Print app as well. It also supports Google Cloud Print, which lets you send documents to your printer from any Web-connected computer, smartphone, or other mobile device. Unlike the Canon Pixma TS9020 , it lacks Ethernet connectivity. I tested it on a USB connection with drivers installed on a PC running Windows 10 Professional.
Print Speed
In printing the text-only (Word) portion of our business applications suite, the TS8020 averaged 11.4 pages per minute (ppm). I timed it at 4.4ppm in printing our full business suite, which includes PDF, PowerPoint, and Excel files in addition to the aforementioned Word document, a typical speed for a home inkjet all-in-one printer and a tad faster than the Canon TS9020’s 4.2ppm. The Epson Expression Premium XP-640 ($329.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) was a bit slower in printing out the whole suite, averaging 3.2ppm.
Home inkjets are not known for their document printing speed, and the TS8020 is no exception, but it did prove very fast in printing photos. It averaged just 20 seconds per 4-by-6 print, matching the Canon TS9020. The Epson XP-640 averaged 25 seconds per 4-by-6 print, and the Canon Pixma MG5720 ($586.45 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) averaged 54 seconds.
Output Quality
The TS8020 uses six ink tanks, which include both dye- and pigment-based black inks (which helped it excel in both photo and text printing) and gray, in addition to the usual cyan, magenta, and yellow. The TS8020’s overall output quality, based on our testing, is well above par for an inkjet, with excellent text, above-par photos, and slightly above-par graphics. Text is among the best we have seen for an inkjet, and should be good enough for any business use, even those requiring small fonts.
For graphics, a few backgrounds showed a trace of banding (a regular pattern of faint striations). Although colors were generally well saturated, several backgrounds looked a bit pale. The TS8020 did well with thin colored lines, and in differentiating between similar tones.
Photo quality was above par for an inkjet, similar to what we saw with the Canon MG5720 and a little better than with the Canon TS9020. Colors were vibrant, and there was good retention of detail. The only issue worth note was a slight tint on a monochrome print.

As an all-in-one inkjet printer intended for home use, the Canon Pixma TS8020 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One Printer excels at printing both text and photos. It’s unusually quick at photo printing, much faster than our budget home inkjet all-in-one top pick, the Canon MG5720, and offers some extras, like printing from SD cards, which that model lacks. The TS8020 eschews some primarily office-centric features such as Ethernet, fax, an automatic document feeder, and a port for a USB thumb drive, all of which you’ll find on the Brother MFC-J985DW, our Editors’ Choice inkjet all-in-one for home or home office, which also has unusually low running costs. The Canon TS9020 does offer Ethernet connectivity, but its photo quality couldn’t match the TRS8020’s in our testing. Primarily on the strength of its superb output quality, the TS8020 earns our Editors’ Choice as an inkjet all-in-one geared to home use.
