Mobile Web use in China has officially surpassed PC browsing, according to a new report(Opens in a new window) from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The country now has about 632 million online users, up from about 618 million at the end of 2013.

Mobile devices are helping fuel that growth, with 83.4 percent accessing the Web via the mobile Internet, the first time it has overtaken PC use, which landed at about 81 percent.

A number of users have been using their mobile devices to shop, which should be welcome news for Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant that is about to go public. Mobile shoppers also helped boost mobile payments, according to Reuters(Opens in a new window), increased 63.4 percent.

Gaming was also a top Internet activity, aided perhaps by China’s long-running (though soon to be over) ban on gaming consoles.

Despite the popularity of mobile devices, China is wary of devices from abroad. Recently, it argued that location services on Apple’s iPhone make it a national security risk, an accusation Apple denies.

In May, Chinese officials also reportedly banned Windows 8 on government computers. And China has long been concerned about the country’s “dependence” on the Android operating system.
