Dell OptiPlex 22 3000 Series All-In-One (3240) Review

[ad_1]

The Dell OptiPlex 22 3000 Series All-In-One (3240) (starting at $729, $1,014.81 as tested) is a fine choice if you need fast processing in a business desktop that’s less than $1,000. It has plenty of ports, comes with an optional adjustable stand, and, like the Editors’ Choice Dell OptiPlex 7440 AIO ($899.00 at PCMag Shop)(Opens in a new window) , can be easily repaired or upgraded. It’s a less powerful performer, and has less storage than the 7440 (which costs $600 more), and it doesn’t have the graphics and multimedia capabilities of the Apple iMac 21.5-Inch With 4K Retina Display ( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) . But it does have the features and juice to make it an excellent office PC for the price.

Design and Features
Like the OptiPlex 7440, the 3240 looks like nothing more than a standalone, corporate-black monitor; the system’s internals and ports are all built in. It measures 14.3 by 20.8 by 2.5 inches (HWD) without the stand, and weighs 14 pounds, making it much lighter than the 30-pound HP Sprout ($280.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) . The height-adjustable stand is easy to fine-tune. The display can be pivoted from landscape to portrait mode by turning the back of the integrated monitor, which is an improvement over the stands you get with Apple all-in-ones, such as the 21.5-inch iMac, which only let you adjust the angle.

The screen on the OptiPlex 3240 is a 21.5-inch 1,920-by-1080 non-touch panel that displays full HD video with great clarity, though it’s not as vivid as the 23.8-inch 4K panel found on the OptiPlex 7440. A thick black bezel surrounds the screen, with a small LED light on the bottom-right corner that lets you know if the system is on or is asleep. On the back of the desktop, you’ll find several recessed ports: two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, one Ethernet, and one DisplayPort and one HDMI Out (for connecting to another monitor), along with the power supply. On the left edge of the system, there are two more USB 3.0 ports, a headphone jack, and a smart card reader. We like to have at least a few ports on the side of the system; ports that are only on the back can be difficult to reach. As on the OptiPlex 7440, there are three buttons above the Power button on the right edge for putting the monitor to sleep and adjusting its brightness. Also on the right side, slightly more toward the back, is a DVD/CD-RW drive. This is a generous port selection for an all-in-one, and should be fine for most business users.

It’s relatively easy to get to the system’s internals if you need to upgrade or replace them, unlike on the Apple iMac. Just press a button on the back to release the monitor from the stand; this reveals a small door through which you can access the OptiPlex 3240’s components, such as its hard drive and memory. Our review unit came with a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and 8GB of memory, so boot time was speedy. A number of storage options are available when configuring your system so you can balance speed and cost to meet your needs. For our configuration, 128GB is pretty light, especially if you have a lot of large files to store for work.

Dell OptiPlex 3240 All-In-One Desktop Inline 1

A wireless keyboard and mouse are bundled with the system. The full-size keyboard is snappy to type on, with responsive chiclet-style keys. The mouse is a rather plain Logitech model. The OptiPlex 3240 comes with Windows 10 Pro, which is laden with few preinstalled programs. For providing network connectivity, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 join the aforementioned Ethernet port. Dell protects the OptiPlex 3240 with a three-year limited warranty.

Dell OptiPlex 3240 All-In-One Desktop Benchmarks

Performance
The Dell OptiPlex 3240 is equipped with a 3.7GHz Intel Core i3-6100 processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 that helped it turn in good results on our productivity tests. On the PCMark 8 Work Conventional test, which tests a PC’s general performance, the system registered an impressive score of 3,387, beating out most other business desktops such as the Lenovo ThinkCentre E93z (3,121) and even the OptiPlex 7440 (2,911), and scoring almost dead-even with the HP Sprout (3,381).

Related Story See How We Test Desktops

In multimedia testing, the OptiPlex 3240 was more average. It took 2 minutes, 22 seconds, to encode a video in Handbrake—well behind the Dell OptiPlex 9030 Touch (1:24), OptiPlex 7440 AIO (1:14), and the HP Sprout (1:13). The OptiPlex 3240 needed 3 minutes, 53 seconds, to complete our Photoshop CS6 test, soundly beating the ThinkCentre E93z (6:13), but not our former top pick, the HP EliteOne 800 (3:05) or the HP Sprout (3:18).

On graphics tests, the OptiPlex 3240 really stumbled. It scored a 5,075 on the 3DMark Cloud Gate test, which assesses a system’s 3D graphics capabilities, compared with 9,390 for the HP Sprout and 6,062 for the Lenovo ThinkCentre E93Z. On the Heaven gaming test, the OptiPlex 3240 attained 14 frames per second (fps) on medium quality settings, and 3fps when they were turned up. Other systems were better— the OptiPlex 9030 Touch managed 17fps and 4fps, the OptiPlex 7440 20fps and 5fps, the iMac 29fps and 8fps—though none will offer a scintillating gaming experience. That doesn’t matter much in a professional environment; still, you shouldn’t plan on playing as well as working on this machine.

Conclusions
The Dell OptiPlex 22 3000 Series All-In-One (3240) is a reliable choice for businesses that primarily need simple computing power, such as for spreadsheets and video conferencing, and don’t want to spend much more than $1,000. Your company’s IT team will appreciate the easy access to the hard drive and memory, plus the system has a clear 1080p screen and ports for connecting plenty of peripherals. But if you’re in need of a machine that’s the overall best business all-in-one PC that runs Windows, we recommend the Editors’ Choice Dell OptiPlex 24 Series All-In-One (7440), which costs $600 more but has a larger 4K screen and excellent multimedia performance.
