Dell S2317HWi Review

[ad_1]

If you want to view content from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop on a bigger screen, but don’t want to deal with plugging and unplugging multiple cables, check out the Dell S2317HWi ($369.99). This unique 23-inch monitor is all about wireless connectivity. It uses a mix of 802.11ac, Bluetooth, and Miracast wireless technologies to deliver video and audio without cables from multiple devices.

For example, you can have the monitor mirror your laptop’s screen and display a picture-in-picture (PiP) window of your phone or tablet at the same time without connecting a single cable. Moreover, you can charge your mobile device while it’s wirelessly connected to the display. However, it doesn’t work with iOS, and it has only one wired video input. Its color accuracy is a bit skewed as well. Unless you need the wireless features, Editors’ Choice for midsize mainstream monitors, the Acer H257HU ($369.99 at Acer)(Opens in a new window) , offers a slightly bigger screen with a WQHD resolution and multiple video inputs for around the same price.

Design and Features
The S2317HWi’s($309.99 at Dell)(Opens in a new window) 23-inch In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel has a peak brightness of 250 cd/m2, a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, and a 6-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response. The screen has a somewhat reflective glossy coating and is housed in a 7-pound cabinet, which sports a bezel-free design and a glossy-black finish. The cabinet is supported by a silver, rectangular base that features a wireless battery-charging station for Windows and Android mobile devices that support Qi/PMA wireless charging. However, iPhone and iPad users are out of luck, as Apple devices do not support this technology. The stand provides tilt maneuverability, but you don’t get height, swivel, or pivot adjustments with this monitor.

Physical video inputs are limited to one HDMI port, which is around back next to two USB 2.0 ports, an audio output, and a micro USB port that is reserved for service use. The two USB 2.0 ports can be used to connect a mouse and keyboard, which you can use to control devices that are wirelessly connected, such as a laptop or a phone. There are two 3-watt speakers embedded in the cabinet that are moderately loud, but lack bass.

On the right side of the lower bezel are four function buttons and a Power switch. You use the buttons to access and navigate the settings menus and when pairing the monitor to a wireless device. To pair a laptop or a phone, make sure you’ve downloaded and installed the Dell Wireless Setup utility, which is available from the Google Play store and from Dell’s website. Use the function buttons to select Wireless as your input source, press the Cast Settings button on the laptop or mobile app, and follow the on-screen instructions to press a specific function button to pair the devices.

Picture settings include Brightness, Contrast, and eight picture presets (Standard, Multimedia, Game, Movie, Paper, Warm, Cool, and Custom). Other settings allow you to enable/disable Wireless Charging, adjust Hue and Saturation, adjust the Sharpness level, and select an Aspect Ratio.

The S2317HWi comes with a one-year warranty on parts, labor, and backlight. Included in the box are an HDMI cable and a resource CD with drivers, Dell’s Wireless Display software, and a User Guide.

Performance
In addition to its wireless prowess, the S2713HWi is a capable performer. It had no trouble displaying every shade of gray on the DisplayMate 64-Step Gray-Scale test, and delivered solid highlight and shadow detail in my test images. Colors appeared rich and evenly saturated, but the panel’s color accuracy was slightly off. As shown on the chromaticity chart below, red and blue colors (represented by the colored dots) are closely aligned with their ideal CIE coordinates (represented by the boxes), while green is outside of its ideal zone. Tinting was not an issue, however.

Video and audio synced up nicely when playing video from a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge using the wireless connection, and there was no noticeable stutter or lag. I did notice that my USB mouse controls were a bit sluggish when controlling the phone and when controlling my Windows 8.1-equipped laptop, however.

The panel’s 6-millisecond pixel response did a good job of handling fast motion; there was some ghosting in my Crysis 3 (PC) and Grand Theft Auto V (Sony PlayStation 4) gaming tests, but it was minimal. Input lag, which is the time it takes for the monitor to react to a controller command, was a speedy 9.9 milliseconds, as measured by the Leo Bodnar Video Signal Lag Tester. It came in right behind our fastest monitors, the BenQ XL2430T($449.00 at Walmart)(Opens in a new window) and the SW2700PT($529.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), both of which measured 9.5 milliseconds.

The S2317HWi consumed 16 watts of power while set to the Standard preset (it doesn’t have an ECO mode). That’s much more energy efficient than the AOC G2460PF ($2,108.94 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) (30 watts) and the BenQ XL2420G (30 watts), and a tad more efficient than the Acer R240HY ($109.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) (19 watts).

Conclusion
The Dell S2317HWi may cost a bit more than most 23-inch monitors, but its ability to connect wirelessly to laptops and mobile devices sets it apart from other mainstream models. Moreover, it acts as a wireless charging station for your mobile devices, and lets you control them using a mouse and keyboard. It does offer wired connectivity via a lone HDMI port and two USB ports, but it lacks the usual DisplayPort and DVI inputs found on most monitors. That said, if you’re looking to reduce cable clutter by connecting to your devices wirelessly, the S2317HWi is a sure bet. However, if wireless connectivity isn’t a priority, check out our Editors’ Choice for midsize, mainstream monitors, the Acer H257HU. It offers a slightly bigger WQHD (2,560-by-1,440) panel, as well as DisplayPort and HDMI video inputs, and it costs the same as the S2317HWi.
