Indiegogo Tech Project of the Week: CloudLocker

Project Name: CloudLocker by StoAmigo(Opens in a new window)

Category: Technology

Goal: $50,000

Currently funded: $43,058

Deadline for pledging: August 9, 2013

We all use the cloud. It gives us instant access to our precious stuff stored online, just about anywhere, on any device. But StoAmigo recognizes that for some, the servers run by Microsoft for Skydrive, Google for Google Drive, Amazon, Dropbox, Sugarsync, et al. can never be secure enough. When your data is physically elsewhere, you relinquish control—and access—to someone else. If you want to regain control, StoAmigo suggests CloudLocker.

It’s a mix of service and product. You get a 250GB CloudLocker mini server to store in your home, which lets you access your files via the StoAmigo service anywhere, from any device. If you don’t want anyone else to get access, just unplug it. It’s different from the recently funded Space Monkey because there’s no local storage used on your computers or phones; just access to your files via those devices (specifically Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android devices). If you need more storage plug additional USB drives into your CloudLocker, or pay annually to get storage(Opens in a new window) online in the actual cloud, starting at $12.95 for 10GB.

StoAmigo is using Indiegogo’s “Flexible Funding Campaign” option to raise funds, which means it gets all the money pledged even if it doesn’t meet its full goal. Pre-order now to get the first edition CloudLocker for $295 and the company will throw in some QR dog tags with your info, and a full year of the CloudLocker basic plan (a $54 value!). For $595 you get two CloudLockers, and $1,195 scores you four units; both perks come with VIP toll-free tech support. All perk packages require extra for shipping, and delivery is expected during August.

If you’re not sure it’s for you, you can sign up for a StoAmigo test account(Opens in a new window) before you order the hardware.
