The Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series (240GB) ($174) is the current enterprise-class solid-state drive (SSD) from the Santa Clara-based chip maker, and it is a solid effort (pardon the pun). The SSD comes in 120- to 480-gigabyte capacities, and for the first time is available in both the traditional 2.5-inch (7mm-thick) format, and a M.2 form factor for compact desktops, ultrabooks, and tablets. It’s kind of pricey for the home user, as its added features are really aimed at the corporate buyer.

The Pro 2500 Series( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) isn’t the fastest SSD or the one with the most capacity, but it does come with IT-friendly features that make it more attractive to the corporate buyer who is planning upgrades for hundreds or thousands of existing laptops. In addition to a five-year warranty, the drive includes support for hardware encryption and security (via Opal 2.0, Microsoft eDrive, and Intel vPro). True, these features add to the purchase price, but they are worth it if you need to support non-technical salespeople or line workers across several time zones.

Consumer-oriented drives, like the Crucial MX100( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), may be cheaper and speedier on certain tests, but the Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series is made to be reliable and power-efficient when you’re concerned with supporting hundreds or thousands of users, instead of the single drive in a hobby PC. This SSD is consequently best-suited for corporate use.

The Bottom Line

The Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series is an enterprise-class solid-state drive (SSD) with remote management, security, and low-power features that make it a good choice for IT-managed business laptops.
