Lenovo this week unveiled two new Horizon all-in-one models, a new all-in-one concept for the ThinkCentre series, and a multimode laptop to round things out.
The new models cover categories big and small, with takes on old concepts, like a modular all-in-one design in the ThinkCentre Tiny-In-One, a flexible new look at the laptop with the Edge 15, and two new models of the Horizon portable all-in-one that bring tabletop computing to the home for much less.
Lenovo ThinkCentre Horizon
Lenovo’s Horizon tabletop PC is getting two new models, the slim Horizon 2S and the more affordable Horizon 2E. Updating the IdeaCentre Horizon and the announced but not yet available Horizon 2, the new models reduce the screen size and the price considerably.
Both versions of the portable all-in-one are being updated with fourth-generation Intel Core i7 processors and Windows 8.1, and feature Lenovo’s Aura multi-user interface, which lets two or more people use the device simultaneously. There’s also simple integration with NFC-equipped phones.
The Horizon 2s is a redesign of the Horizon II, designed for greater portability with a lighter weight (5.6 pounds) and slimmer 0.59-inch thick chassis. This is a full 10 pounds lighter than the Horizon 2, though most of this difference can be attributed to the new 19.5-inch display, which is significantly smaller than the 27-inch display seen on previous Horizon models.
The Horizon 2s has a built-in kickstand for use as a standalone portable desktop, but is also available with an optional desktop stand, which provides power and sets up the large tablet-like PC for a more traditional desktop experience. Whenever you want to make use of the PC’s tabletop features, just lift it off of the stand.
The Horizon 2s features a 19.5-inch display with 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, and comes equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor, up to 500GB solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD), and offers up to 2.5 hours of battery life. The Horizon 2s will be available this September starting at $949, with the optional desktop stand sold separately. Pricing for the stand has not yet been announced.
Where the Horizon 2s cuts weight, the Horizon 2e cuts the price, starting at a budget-friendly $749. The Horizon 2e features a 21.5-inch display with 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, and has a built-in easel stand that can be adjusted to a range of angles, allowing you to use the portable all-in-one upright like a traditional desktop, or lying nearly flat for a tabletop experience. The Horizon 2e is outfitted with an Intel Core i7 processor, and can be configured with up to 1TB of storage, with regular hard drive and SSHD configurations available. It’s not quite as lightweight as the slim Horizon 2s, but still weighs in at a respectable 10.1 pounds and measures 1.1-inches thick. The ThinkCentre Horizon 2e will be available this October.
Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny-in-One 23
Lenovo’s next announcement takes all-in-
one PCs in a very different direction, with the new ThinkCentre Tiny-in-One 23. The Tiny-In-One uses the pint-sized ThinkCentre Tiny, like last year’s Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p Tiny, as the core of a modular all-in-one PC. Lenovo’s micro PC, which measures just 7 inches by 7 inches, slides into a socket on the back of the TIO 23, a 23-inch full HD monitor. The two combine like Voltron to become a full-fledged all-in-one.
The unique modular design locks in the small desktop, providing full access to the existing ports and adds front access to two USB 3.0 ports, along with the 23-inch 1,920-by-1,080-pixel display. When the desktop needs to be upgraded, rather than discarding the entire system, you can simply remove the micro desktop from the rear compartment and replace it with another. The ThinkCentre Tiny-in-One 23 supports current and older models of the ThinkCentre Tiny, and future versions of the micro PC will be made with this compatibility in mind.
The ThinkCentre Tiny-in-One 23 will be available in October, with a starting price of $279 for the monitor alone. Bundled options including the ThinkCentre Tiny micro PC will also be available.
Lenovo Edge 15
Last but not least, Lenovo unveiled the
new Edge 15, a 15-inch dual-mode laptop in the same vein as the Lenovo Flex 2 (15-Inch), but with a thinner, lighter design. The Edge 15 features a 300-degree hinge, allowing for some multimode functionality, with Laptop, Tent, and Stand modes, but not the tablet mode offered by Lenovos Yoga convertibles.
The Edge 15 features a premium aluminum chassis, a full HD (1,920-by-1,080 pixel) 15.6-inch display, with 10-point touch and In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology. The slim laptop weighs just 5.1 pounds and measures only 0.78-inch thick.
Inside the Edge 15 is Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, with either Intel integrated graphics or an Nvidia GeForce GT840M discrete graphics processor. The laptop comes with 8GB of RAM, and storage of up to 1TB (hard drive) or 256GB (SSD).
The Lenovo Edge 15 will be sold through Best Buy starting this October, with a starting price of $899.
