Tech companies are winding down for Christmas and end of year celebrations, but at the same time preparing for CES in early January. LG just gave us a sneak peek at what we can expect to see from them in Las Vegas next month, with an ultra-wide 5K monitor being the stand-out announcement.

LG is actually touting two new monitors(Opens in a new window) launching next year. The first is the 32UK950, which is a 32-inch UHD monitor with a 4K resolution. It can display 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color spectrum and supports HDR 600, although it’s unconfirmed whether this is LG’s own reference to HDR support or the official VESA certified DisplayHDR 600 standard Samsung’s 34-inch CHG90 monitor recently achieved.

The 32UK950 includes Thunderbolt 3 ports meaning you can plug a compatible laptop in and output to the display while charging your laptop using a single cable. Daisy-chaining also means you can hook up dual 4K monitors.

Then we have the LG 34WK95U, which will draw a lot of attention at CES. LG decided to combine a 21:9 aspect ratio with a 5K resolution to offer an extremely wide 34-inch monitor aimed at multitaskers. The resolution is actually 5,120-by-2,160, so it will still handle 4K content with borders while giving you more room for visible apps using your OS of choice. Add to that a “4 Side-Edge Borderless Design” and Thunderbolt 3, and LG could top a few monitor charts in 2018.

Both of these new LG monitors use the company’s Nano IPS technology. What that does it to add “nanometer-sized particles to the screen’s LED to absorb excess light wavelengths.” The end result is greatly enhanced on-screen colors in terms of “intensity and purity.” People can make their own minds up as to the difference in quality on the LG stand in Las Vegas.
