If you’re in the market for a 3D desktop scanner, you can now order one from MakerBot.

The Brooklyn-based 3D-printing company on Thursday opened pre-orders(Opens in a new window) for its Digitizer 3D desktop scanner, which is expected to begin shipping in mid-October. The device is available worldwide and will set you back $1,400 plus an optional $150 for the MakerCare(Opens in a new window) service and support program.

First unveiled in March at SXSW in Austin, the Digitizer lets you scan a real-life object, and will create a 3D digital file that can be printed out on MakerBot’s Replicator 2 and other 3D printers. The device can digitize physical objects up to 8 inches in diameter, 8 inches tall, and up to 6.6 lbs (3 kg).

“Bringing the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner into the world has been a big goal of ours this year,” MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis said in a statement. “This is another innovative product for visionaries, early adopters, experimenters, educators, creative hobbyists, 3D sculptors, organic modelers, designers, and architects who want to be the first to become an expert in desktop 3D Scanning.”

The Digitzer scans objects using a camera and two lasers, and the resulting digital file can be modified in third-party modeling programs like the free MeshMixer, MakerBot said. One of the coolest aspects about the device is that it does not require you to have any design or 3D software experience to get started.

“We focused on making the MakerBot Digitizer super easy to use, intuitive, and simple,” Pettis said.

Besides printing out scanned objects yourself, you can upload your digital file directly to MakerBot’s Thingverse(Opens in a new window), a site for sharing 3D printable objects. The Thingverse community now has more than 100,000 members, MakerBot said.
