We’ve all been there: Warring with an outdated computer that runs too slow, freezes too often, and crashes too quickly. It’s annoying, but does not drive most people to violence.
Lucas Hinch, 37, of Colorado Springs, is not most people. Hinch was arrested Tuesday after shooting and killing his Dell XPS 410 computer.
Local police responded to the incident just before 7 p.m. on April 20, later reporting that “a resident was fed up with fighting his computer for the last several months.”
“He took the computer into the back alley and fired [eight] shots into the computer with a handgun, effectively disabling it,” the police blotter said(Opens in a new window).
Hinch was cited for discharging a firearm within city limits; there is, however, no law in the state regarding machine homicide, police confirmed to the Los Angeles Times(Opens in a new window).
Despite his arrest, Hinch was “very matter-of-fact about it and cooperative,” a police spokeswoman told the Times. “He had just gotten a new gun and had enough of his computer.”
The accused told the paper that he has no regrets. “It was glorious,” he said. “Angels sung on high.”
Facing the machine’s feared “blue screen of death,” Hinch called the situation “extremely frustrating,” adding that he’d “reached critical mass.” Which is when he picked up his new 9mm pistol.
Though Hinch faces a possible fineamount unknownit is highly unlikely he will face any jail time, according to the police, who seized Hinch’s gun, but reportedly left(Opens in a new window) the massacred computer tower behind.
Dell did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment. The desktop in question is from 2006, however, so the slowdowns were likely just normal wear and tear on a nine-year-old.
This is not the first time a PC has met its demise by a trigger-happy individual. In 2012, a father shot his kid’s laptop over a Facebook post that complained about her parents and chores.
