Modern first-person shooters usually allow you to peek around corners, but the nearly 30-year-old Doom had no such feature. With the aid of a holographic display, however, corner peeking is now possible in id Software’s classic game.

As TweakTown reports(Opens in a new window), Twitter user Jan Kaiser shared a short video of Doom running on a holographic display (see below) developed by Looking Glass Factory. Kaiser walks up to a pillar in the game and then rotates the display to see what’s hiding behind it. For playing the game it’s unpractical, but as an experiment it’s an impressive demonstration of the technology.

In December, Kaiser created a prototype of Minecraft running on the same holographic display(Opens in a new window). To get it working, he wrote a custom shader to extract a depth map from the game every other frame. A combination of Python code, ThreeJS, and a web browser then allowed Minecraft to run on the display with added depth.

The Doom implementation seems to build on that earlier prototype. The Looking Glass Portrait(Opens in a new window) holographic display is 7.9 inches, has a 58-degree viewing cone, and an input resolution of 1,536-by-2,048 pixels. It’s manufactured from glass, plastics, and a “proprietary lens mix.”

Looking Glass Factory has it up for pre-order for $249, although the price will rise to $349 after it launches in July. Other than experiments with games, the display simply plugs into a PC via USB-C, and you can then create your own holographic photos and video messages to enjoy. It certainly promises to bring photos to life.
