When is a Porsche not a Porsche? When it’s a laptop. Venturing into the world of computers, after its special-edition Huawei Mate 9 and Huawei Watch 2 devices, designers at the car giant have created the bespoke Porsche Design Book One.

The Book One is a convertible, detachable two-in-one laptop running Windows 10. It’s made of milled aluminium and has a hinge that can rotate 360-degrees. The hinge, according to the company, is inspired by the “transmission of a sports car”.

The catch? It costs a pretty penny. The Book One will go on sale in the US and a few other countries in April 2017 for $2,495 (£2,000).

Inside there’s an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The 13.3-inch touchscreen display has a resolution of 3,200 by 1,800 pixels. Outside, there’s two USB-C ports, two USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt 3 port. The Book One also has dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 5MP camera with infrared sensor that doubles-up as a secure way to login to the laptop.

Porsche Design, founded by designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1972, lends the car company’s name to everything from headphones and sunglasses to smartphones and jackets.

As you might expect from a laptop using the Porsche name, design is a big focus. The keyboard is backlit, there’s a digital stylus optimised for Windows Ink and the whole thing is made of milled, matte-finish aluminium.
