Apple has long worked with U2 frontman Bono’s (RED) charity foundation(Opens in a new window), creating red versions of its popular products, with a percentage of the profits from their sales going straight to the Global Fund in an effort to bolster HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.

Typically, these colorful products have consisted of Apple’s more mobile devices: iPads, iPods, and iPhones, though in the iPad’s case, Apple just sold red iPad covers – not a red-backed iPad (which would have been pretty cool to see, just saying.)

Which makes us all the more interested – visually, at least – by a product that Apple is putting up for auction next month in support of the aforementioned (RED) charity: the 11-pound, $3,000 upcoming Mac Pro. The updated circular desktop system, expected in December, is definitely doing its part to combat the stale, old, boxy form factors found in the other 99 percent of the computing world.

If you think the system’s cost is a bit extravagant, even considering what you’re getting under the hood, then you ain’t seen nothing yet. Since Apple is auctioning off its lovely red Mac Pro for charity at Sotheby’s, one gets a whole new meaning to the phrase, “Apple tax.” In this case, the current estimate for the all-red Mac Pro has been listed(Opens in a new window) at anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000. Hooray for charity and all, but yikes for the bank account.

Worse, there’s no confirmation yet as to which iteration of the Mac Pro one can actually start bidding on come Nov. 23 (at 7 p.m. ET). We can only assume that Apple’s gone top-of-the-line with its red Mac Pro — why wouldn’t it? — which could mean a 2.7GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 64GB of 1855MHz DDR3 memory, dual AMD FirePro D700 graphics cards, and a terabyte of PCIe-based flash storage.

That, right there, is a pretty powerful desktop, one that will easily be able to handle three 4K desktop displays sans issue. That, or up to six Thunderbolt displays — take your pick!

The retailer version of the Mac Pro will come in black. For more, check out PCMag’s hands on with the new Mac Pro, the video below and slideshow above, as well as New Mac Pro Gives Apple More Business Gravitas.

The red Mac Pro is not the only Apple product being auctioned off on Nov. 23, meanwhile. A special edition Leica M camera designed by Apple’s Jony Ive, not to mention a pair of solid rose gold Apple EarPods, will also be up for grabs.

Earlier this year, a coffee date with Apple CEO Tim Cook also fetched $610,000 via the CharityBuzz website.
