Think it would be neat to own a 3D-printed iPhone case, figurine, or piece of jewelry? EBay has you covered!
The online auction company on Friday launched a new iPhone app dubbed eBay Exact, which offers customizable 3D-printed items for sale. At this point, you can choose from around 20 different items from three major 3D printing companies — Brooklyn-based MakerBot(Opens in a new window), France’s Sculpteo(Opens in a new window), and Toronto’s Hot Pop Factory(Opens in a new window).
Items range from quirky personalized figurines to fashion-forward earrings, rings, and necklaces. They cost anywhere from $9 for a plastic iPhone case all the way up to $350 for a polished silver ring.
Most of the items available for sale through the app are customizable, letting you select the materials and color. You can pay for items through PayPal, and will receive them within 7 to 14 business days.
“Shoppers today not only want to buy items anytime, anywhere through mobile devices, but they also want to be able to personalize their purchases,” Steve Yankovich, vice president of innovation and new ventures for eBay, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) Friday. “EBay Exact brings these two desires into one shopping experience.”
Meanwhile on the 3D-printing front, NASA this week announced(Opens in a new window) it had finished testing a 3D-printed rocket engine injector. The space agency said 3D printing technology “may lead to more efficient manufacturing of rocket engines, saving American companies time and money.”
Manufactured with traditional processes, the injector would have taken more than a year to construct. It can be 3D-printed in less than four months, with a 70 percent reduction in cost.
