The demand for wireless travel The 3100P Wireless Optical Mouse ($24.99) is Rapoo’s take on a compact travel mice, but it doesn’t have any outstanding qualities that distinguish it from other wireless mice, and its flimsy top panel and loose scroll wheels are drawbacks.

Design and Features
At 3.5 by 2.25 by 1.35 inches (HWD) and weighing 3.52 ounces, the 3100P( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is heavy for its size when compared with the 3-ounce Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Mouse($17.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window). This is because, like its big brother, the Rapoo 7100P Wireless Optical Mouse( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), it’s powered by two AA batteries located underneath the top panel. Most travel mice, like the Microsoft Sculpt, use only one AA battery.

The storage area for the USB receiver, the On/Off switch, and the optical sensor are all located at the bottom of the mouse. Its ambidextrous design allows use for both left- and right-handed people.

The mouse features left-, right-, and scroll-wheel clicking. The left and right buttons have slight indentations at their edges, but it’s still easy for people with big hands like mine to have their fingers slide off when using the mouse. The 3100P comes in three different colors—black, blue, or white—each with its own surface design. The patterns are lightly textured, but you don’t really feel them during when you grip the mouse.

Installing the batteries reveals a significant problem with the mouse’s top panel. The panel is thin and flimsy, making it susceptible to breaking if not handled carefully. Theoretically, for instance, it should be a simple process of pressing a button at the rear end to get the top panel to flip up. In reality, opening it required me to grip the sides of the mouse firmly as I pressed the button in order to get the panel to flip open. Replacing the panel after inserting the batteries was equally difficult. It didn’t want to set back into the base properly, and I ended up having to press down the area around the scroll wheel to put it back into place.

Performance
The 3100P connects to the USB 2.0 receiver via a 5GHz wireless connection, which reduces interference from Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signals. I found the connection smooth, and lag was nonexistent when I clicked on various websites during testing. The mouse has a sensitivity of 1,000 dots per inch (DPI), so panning to the edge of the screen takes some movement. The scroll wheel feels loose; at first I assumed it was because it offered left- and right-click functionality, but it doesn’t.

Overall, the Rapoo 3100P Wireless Optical Mouse feels a bit heavy and uncomfortable for a travel mouse, and its poor design, especially the top panel, can result in a frustrating user experience. Even though the 3100P comes at a low price, you’re better off with a wireless mouse like the Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Mouse, with its customizable functions and hand-detection software.

The Bottom Line

The Rapoo 3100P Wireless Optical Mouse is meant for travel, but only offers basic functions, and its weight and flimsy top panel give us pause.
