Samsung on Thursday introduced a new eco-friendly 2.5-inch solid state drive (SSD) for high-end enterprise storage systems which the company said significantly boosts sequential and random read performance over existing products with similar specifications.
The high-speed NVM Express (NVMe) XS1715 SSD is available in 400GB, 800GB, and 1.6TB flavors, with the 1.6TB version delivering “a sequential read speed at 3,000MB/s, which allows it to process 500GB of data (equivalent to 100 Full HD movies 5GB in length) in less than three minutes,” Samsung said in a statement.
That sequential read performance is 14 times faster than equivalent high-end hard disk drives (HDDs) for the enterprise storage market and six times faster than Samsung’s previous top-of-the-line SSD solution for storage.
Random read performance has also been dramatically improved with the XS1715, Samsung said. Maxing out at 740,000 input-output operations per second (IOPS), the new SSD is “more than 10 times as fast as existing high-end SSD storage options,” the company said.
Samsung said that over the next several years, it will continue to develop SSDs utilizing the NVMe specification to bring products with “increasingly high performance levels” to market.
The South Korean tech giant also touted the green merits of low-power NVMe SSDs.
“By strengthening its eco-friendly cooperation with global enterprise customers through the production of low-power (green) NVMe SSDs, Samsung will endeavor to help its server and storage customers maximize the efficiency of their IT investments,” the company said.
