Samsung’s new 2TB 960 Pro SSD is the highest-capacity M.2 drive on the market. Unveiled today along with the 960 Evo, it offers PC builders and upgraders higher bandwidth and lower latency for processing massive amounts of data.

Both the 960 Pro and 960 Evo SSDs will be available starting in October. The Pro’s smallest capacity is 512GB for $329, while the 2TB will retail for $1,299. The Evo starts at $129 for its base 256GB version.

Drives with the M.2 form factor are much smaller than traditional 2.5- or 3.5-inch drives long used in laptops and desktops. Samsung’s Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) technology allows it to eke a lot of performance from the small packages. The 960 Pro delivers peak sequential read and write transfer speeds of 3,500 MB/s and 2,100 MB/s, respectively. That makes it the world’s fastest M.2 NVMe SSD, Samsung says.

The 960 Pro comes with a warranty of up to five years or 1.2 petabytes of written data, whichever comes first. The 960 Evo, meanwhile, has peak sequential read and write speeds of 3,200 MB/s and 1,900 MB/s, respectively. It comes with a three-year or 400TB written warranty.

For users who tweak SSD settings to always make sure they’re squeezing out every last megabyte of read and write performance, the drives support Samsung’s Magician software. In addition to providing access to settings, it also delivers firmware updates.

Both drives use V-NAND technology, which allows Samsung to increase their density by adding more layers to each flash module. The 960 Pro achieves its top 2TB capacity with a total of 48 layers compared to the 32 layers on the 950 Pro.
